Question about tropical systems

#1 Postby asd123 » Fri Jul 04, 2014 7:24 pm

I was just looking at the 500 mb temps at a location close to where hurricane Arthur hit and the 500 mb temps were around -2, and after hurricane Arthur, they went back to -7 or -8. Question is, why do the mid level temps at 500 mb warm so much during a hurricane or tropical cyclone?

It is basically in laymen's terms a latent heat pump. The TC ingests huge amounts of warm ocean water which the cloud bands, as they form, suck out every ounce of moisture to fuel the circulation. Think of the moisture as the gas in a car. The by product being hot, dry, air which is shot into the surrounding upper levels of the atmosphere.

Yes. The latent heat of condensation is incredibly large...so much so that it can warm even the mid levels above cloud level. Good explanation.

Tropical cyclones are heat engines.
