Texas Summer - 2014

Yeah, there was a point last night where several cells congealed into one larger mass of very heavy rain ... and that happened over central and east Austin. I saw some amazing pics on Twitter late last night from flooding near 10th/Red River. Water was up to the windows of cars parked on the street. Waller Creek was waaaay out of its banks!

Overall this was a very easy forecast from 7-10 days ago. I remember first posting about Super Typhoon Neoguri which not only as was strong but very large buckling the jet stream. It indeed played out very nicely and will be useful tool the next couple of months as the WPAC (along with EPAC) seasons starts to ramp up.

Super Typhoon Rammasun likely will offer a repeat of the pattern that we experienced this week. Look for another deep trough to develop across the Central/Eastern US and I will not be too surprised to see a wash/rinse /repeat pattern in about 10 to 12 days as we head into early August.

I am far from an expert, but Rammasun does not appear to recurve so not sure it will have a significant affect on our weather. Though the TD behind it may have a better chance at recurving though not sure if it will end up strong enough to have a large affect. I would welcome another jet stream buckler, but we may have to wait a bit as there is a reason we have rarely seen a summer jet stream over the US like the current one.

I got a message from Southerngale - she cannot post right now. There is a lot of flooding in Beaumont with cars trapped in the roadways and water rescues. She is fine but they are putting sandbags around the back door of her workplace.

I had hardly anything at my place.

Yep, they are/were getting hammered. It is cloudy and EXTREMELY humid outside. I mowed and I was soaked from head to toe. I mowed to let the ground dry out. I think. LOL

I love humidity, so the weather up here is fantastic! 68 and 88% humidity. I almost wore a jacket to the ice rink this morning. My parents live in the Beaumont area, and my Mom was able to get to work, but she said their yard and road are completely covered with water.

I believe the front is supposed to basically wash out over y'all but you have upper level energy in bound from the west that is supposed to kick up more convection. We shall see. The HGX mid morning AFD spoke to convection mainly along and southeast of the US 59 corridor.

Thanks, I been watching the radars for any signs of redeveloping rain. Houston proper and immediate vicinity dodged the bullet last night so wasn't sure if we was out of the woods. Everything appeared to be moving out but heavy rain appears to have started training over counties immediately south of Houston.

DFW did it again today, the high temperature maxed at 77F beating the old record of 79F for July 18th. Austin so far has been about the same which I'm sure is some kind of record.



Euro is hinting at another major anomalous trough in the long range for the eastern conus. We'll be rumbling about that pattern soon with a few more runs...

My car thermometer read 79 degrees at 4:30 pm today, JULY 18th. Wish this were the norm all Summer! But I guess if it were, there would be nothing to talk about. Bob Rose mentioned today's temps in his blog today:

Note that readings are in the mid and upper 70s across a good part of North, West and Central Texas. This is rare site for Texas for the middle of July! Temperatures this mild in the middle of the afternoon in the middle of summer are almost unheard of. Temperatures on this map are more reflective of the middle of October rather than the middle of July.

I saw somewhere online this morning that mid July temps like this in the DFW and Austin areas haven't been seen since 1962. Not sure if that is accurate but that's what I read. Besides, I read it on the Internet so it can't be wrong, right?!

Still hovering in mid 70s after the noon hour at DFW. This has got to be one of the coolest week ever for July and definitely mid to late July. If you were told a few months ago there would be a string of days below 80 for highs in July people would think you were nuts.

No doubt. I've worn jeans two straight days and have been comfortable outside - IN JULY. Unprecedented.


I haven't really looked at all the pieces yet for winter, but my inclination is the WSI is going to drop exponentially.

Forecast for today called for upper 80s, but we are still in the low 70s with drizzle all day. Maybe by tomorrow things will clear up to sure summer to begin its return. I will enjoy the October like weather while it lasts though.
