Hurricane of 1938 and Isabelle

#1 Postby tomboudreau » Sat Sep 13, 2003 7:15 pm

What are the chances of Hurricane Isabelle following the same path as the Hurricane of 1938 that devasted Long Island and New England? TWC is reshowing Storms of the Century, and the number 5 storm was this particular hurricane. They showed the path of the '38 storm and it looked very similar to the path of Isabelle of today. Could this storm follow something close to that? Also, the anniversary of the '38 is next Sunday, Sept. 21. It would be down right scary if Isabelle would do something close and have a landfall really close to this storm. Just something else to ponder on.

I think every time a hurricane comes up the coast, comparisons will be made to '38. That storm was unique because of its extreme forward speed (70mph!) and the fact that it came without warning.

I think the worst case scenario would be if a hurricane moving NNW hit New Jersey. The tides piling up on the right side of the storm at the bend of the coastline at NYC would be catastrophic. That's what would scare me the most.
