On TWC, or one of our local mets said, if the High Pressure currently off the coast of New England stays where it is, the EC is going to have a huge problem with Isabel, but if it moves off the coast Isabel may take a track like Fabian...
Is this right???

Yes - think about it: that would allow the hurricane to recurve. What's holding it down now is the ridge to the north.

Neither am I

Neither am I but that one was pretty much in the common sense department (which should be par for the course of a TV met).

That's another point...with a strong high pressure progged to the hurricane's northeast, the tremendous pressure gradient could produce storm to hurricane force winds WELL to the north and east of where landfall occurs. A landfall near Chesepeak Bay may mean storm surge flooding and 55-75 mph wind gusts all the way to Cape Cod and Nantucket....at least along the immediate coast.
