Watching Isabel go by

#1 Postby caribepr » Sun Sep 14, 2003 9:32 am

On a lighter note:

Here on Culebra (PR) the sky is incredible! Sorry I don't have a digital camera to share it with you all. After yesterday when the all the air seemed to be sucked out of the air, today is breezy and the sky is filled with all the vapor / lines / types of clouds that the sat views show...but from the terra firma side...absolute beautiful (of course...that's easy for me to say; this is the first day we're feeling relief after over two weeks of watching Fabian and Isabel like hawks, and nothing new -yet- coming in). Even the hummingbirds are back and the surfers are happy.
Wishing the best for those of you in her path (prepare for the worst, hope for the best, keep the rum barrel stocked - btw, the poster who mentioned getting propane tanks filled, a great call lots forget about! A camping stove can be a beautiful thing if you're on electric).

hi caribepr
we can say the same here on St. Maarten
Friday was so hot.. not a hint of a breeze... it was hard to even breathe
Saturday was cloudy all day.. very humid..a slight breeze
today is beautiful!
the humidity is lower. the sky is blue and there is a delightful breeze.
Isabel passed so far North of the island that I don't think we even got much high surf
apparently though the airlines did their usual stupidness. there were reports of US Air cancelling flights to St. Maarten and passengers were told it was because the airport was closed!
talk about hysteria!
hoping for a positive outcome for those of you now going through the same anxiety we were

Thank god that she did not turn west below 18n because we would haved been suffering right now catastrofic damage in the islands but it was a weakness in the ridge or a weak trough that safed us.Here we have gray skies and low wind but here some feeder bands from the south may come in later on.The surf is not that bad 6-10 feet as it was way more high with Fabian.

Caribepr, the only visual memories I have of your island is from a US
Navy destroyer in the early 70s using your island as target practice. I
apologize my dear friend. Love to see it again.

No problem Pileus! There is still a tank on the beach (erosion from Isabel severe, it's sort of more in the water now, but I doubt it's going anywhere) and the bomb squad comes in once a year to detonate your leftovers - last fall they found a 1000 lb. bomb - but it's all safe and lovely now, come back for a look, well worth the visit if you like having nothing to do but enjoy peace and beauty.
