feel the effects of Isabel:

Statement as of 11:00 am AST on September 14, 2003

...Powerful Isabel continuing to move west-northwestward...

at 11 am AST...1500z...the center of major Hurricane Isabel was
located near latitude 23.7 north...longitude 66.3 west or about
370 miles...595 km...east-northeast of the Turks and Caicos
Islands.

Isabel is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph...19 km/hr...
and this general motion is expected to continue for the next 24
hours.

Maximum sustained winds are near 155 mph...250 km/hr...with higher
gusts. Some fluctuations in strength are likely during the next
24 hours.

Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 85 miles...140 km...
from the center...and tropical storm force winds extend outward up
to 200 miles...325 km.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 939 mb...27.73 inches.

Large ocean swells and dangerous surf conditions are likely over
portions of the greater and Lesser Antilles...the Turks and Caicos
Islands...and the islands of the Bahamas over the next few days.
These dangerous surf conditions will also affect portions of the
southeastern U.S. Coast during the next several days.

I notice how she continues to move only 0.4 north per advisory yet 1.1 west.. she is inching ever so closer to those Bahamian Islands.. I would not want to be them right about now..

Yep. Only 1.1N in the last 18 hours compared to 3.7W. Hardly WNW, and surely not 290. 290 heading would be 1.1 and 2.2.

That's no suprise, Josephine. A WNW motion just telling that it's moving more westard but with but somewhat northward as well. So you expect to gain more longitude than the latitude, but the fact that is gaining latitude means it's not heading due west. If the motion was supposed to be more NW than you would expect to gain just about much latitude as gain longitude.

Sounds like a reasonable answer... But we in Florida still need to watch it very closely in my opinion..

and this post makes me a TROPICAL STORM! :)

I agree with Josephine. 285 degrees (my current calculation) is not AWAY from Florida. I look forward to seeing something over 300 degrees when I wake up tomorrow! (not Florida temperature combined with humidity, either!)

LOL Space Island.. If she is still moving WNW tomorrow morning.. we'll be in real trouble cause she'll be past 70 W and on her way to 75..
