Fascination Recon Observations From Chris Landsea

#1 Postby wxman57 » Sun Sep 14, 2003 12:43 pm

As some of you may know, Chris Landsea had worked with Dr. Gray for many hears. Now Chris is on his own at NOAA. He's one of the lucky guys who gets to go out on the recon missions and fly through these storms. I just got an e-mail from him describing yesterday's flights. Makes for interesting reading. Chris says there is a lack of any banding outside the eyewall, and the comparison to a big truck tire. Also noted is his remark about such storms being very stable (i.e. less of a tendency to weaken). That could be bad news for the east coast. The only good news I could see is that with virtually no squalls outside the eyewall, rainfall would be less with a storm like thls.

Interesting indeed as aparently it is a small core that has those powerful winds.

wow wxman57 that sounds like an interesting flight he took. Keep us posted if he emails you an other observations. That's what I find so fascinating is how they can fly into a hurricane with such magnitude and return safe and sound.

This will be a storm where new data and new technology will be tested and then hopefully save lives in the future from lessons learned.

Chris's comments seem to echo the article that Derecho posted yesterday...about these storms not weakening as quickly as normal...scary thought!

Note that I decided to remove Chris' actual e-mail as it was not intended for public viewing and I don't want to be removed from their mailing list.

We respect that privacy Wxman - if you can post some of the interesting points of his flight for future emails.

Again - thanks .....
