Evacuation Question
I am in Smithfield, VA (about 35 miles as the crow flies) from VA Beach. I am lost as to if we would need to evacuate here or if it would be safe to stay. Any opinions would be great! Thanks..

Many of us may have an opinion, but nothing is as important to you and yours as the local guidance. FEMA and other preparedness agencies have detailed data on your area. If they tell you to go, then go. This hurricane is too strong to ride out. 35 miles is a bit inland always consider surge and flooding.

Flooding will not be a problem as badly I do not think, nor will surge in Smithfield. If I'm not mistaken, Smithfield did OK during Floyd, relatively. The main problem if any is wind. If you have a fear of trees falling on your house, then I would consider going inland just a little ways. Otherwise, you should be OK where you are, as long as you are not in a mobile home.
BTW, I've never heard any of our FEMA people tell us anything about what to do...unless we're right on the beach---so it's your judgement call.

URGE YOU TO READ posts in thread headlined...
...as....." Poll, how far will you go inland".....or some similar words. in short, you are way too close to the shore!. Go far far inland. cannot understand the "relaxed" replies you have so far.
Go read that other post, esp the re fm a pro meteorologist fm houston...and his wind models that show destructive winds well inland,...model fm the NHC itself.Remember, phones can go out, incl cell phones...fm overuse of lines and no antenna relay power up on their relay poles. Gasoline at stations gets diluted from storm water and is useles, plus lines at stations get looooong. Local gov here is very much turkies. Maybe also in your area. Leave, and soon, avoid gridlock. Fools die.

If you (or anyone else) need additional VA info on evacs or locations and conditions, feel free to email me (or PM). Best email address right now for me is on the WREL Model Map page. This is going to be life for the next week :? and will help if I can.
short answer... inland counties evac only for convenience and flooding. Most counties open shelters for those who feel unsafe in their home and as a location destination for those vacating flood areas or mobile homes in high wind warnings.
also visit: http://www.vdes.state.va.us/

for additional VA info.
