Drop the names, go to numbering.

No more fussing over who gets to name what or request removal. No more goofy names like 'Fung Wong'.

Odile would have been 2014EP16

However, it would be more ambiguous especially for those who don't really have knowledge about tropical cyclones. The point of the NHC giving names is to warn people or inform them in a less intricate manner. Storms need a unique identifier that is understandable by the general public.

BTW, the JMA gives special designations for tropical cyclones like e.g HAIYAN was the 30th storm in 2013 so it was designated as 1330.

If Odile is replaced, I think the best choice would be a name that's traditionally been used in Mexico.

"Diccionairo Etimologico Comparado de Nombres Propios de Persona" (by Gutierre Tibon) includes these as some women's names starting with O that aren't on the Atlantic or EPAC lists:

Obdulia
Oda
Olaya
Olimpia
Olinda
Ondina
Onelia
Oralia
Oria
Otilia
Ozana

Disagree. If that is the case, I'll have a harder time remembering which storm is which when looking back. Names stick out more.

Another thought, although I names are hard to find, due to political reasons could the name "Isis", on the 2016 EPAC list, be replaced?

I hadn't even thought of that! Oy... you're right, that name really does need to go. We're gonna run out of I names lol... but could you imagine the news the past few weeks if Odile had been named Isis?

We will need a female I replacement name to get rid of that name. Not sure who should lead the push to dump that name for political reasons though...at least we have 2 years but it would be better if it was removed at the first opportunity.

The EPAC name Isis is also pronounced EYE-sis, the same as the political group. Clearly warrants replacement.

Female I names: Ida, Ileana, Imelda, Ingrid, Inez, Ione, Irene, Iris, Irma, Isabel, Iselle, Isis, Ismael (may need to replace 2 female I names)

Oh god.

I may be wrong here, but I recall readiding somewhere that in 2001 the WMO stopped removing names from political leaders.

To be quite fair, Isis has been a female name for a long time. Before that stupid political group came into play, the last time I heard that name was when it was the name of a character who parodied Madonna on Hannah Montana.

It's not the WMO's fault that some political group has that name, when it's been on the list for as long as Channing Tatum has been alive...even Nelly Furtado I think

The name Isis goes back a LONG time. She's an Ancient Egyptian goddess.

I know nice people named Adolph too, but that name obviously couldn't be on a storm name list, and neither could Isis IMO.

Adolph was used 4 times in the EPAC. Had Ismael been replaced by any other name besides Israel, Adolph would probably still be on the list.

It was Adolph's usage that sparked Isreal's removal. Not the other way around.
