peninsula (pop. 1.2 million), can anyone hazard a guess?
If an evacuation was ordered for the Atlantic coastal communities of that area (such as Ocean City, Maryland), how many hours ahead of a major hurricane would such an evacuation order need to go out.
To be more specific, since areas of Delmarva essentially become islands hours in advance of an approaching hurricane, what would be the best current estimate for the absolute latest time for an evac order to be given for the coastal communities, assuming current track speed projections remain accurate if the track stays the same or nudges slightly to the right?
Given the geography and population of the Delmarva...

48 hours would be my guess. It takes 36 just for our itty-bitty island of Galveston. From what I can see here http://storm2k.org/Weather-Central/Emer ... PhaseI.htm and on other maps I've looked out of the DelMarVa area, you have to take Route 13 north and away, right?
I've never been here for an all-out evac yet, but I know many people have told me and they told us during the Galv preparedness meeting that it takes at LEAST 36 hours to evacuate everyone. So you want to get out well before 36 hours before landfall. I'm sure you've heard the horror stories of people being stuck in traffic, right?
Just my opinion, but I'd be packing up the car today, sleep tonight, and get ready to leave tomorrow.
