I have been viewing this water vapor imagery this afternoon and am wondering what everyone's comments are.

Click "Animation," then between southern Florida and Hurricane Isabel, [but more so due east of Florida because further south I understand is the circulation around the hurricane] to see the upper level steering ahead of Isabel. The more frames you view the better you will see the steering.
I believe what you are seeing is response to the ridge to Isabel's northeast and the weakening trough to the west (off the satellite image).
Thank you in advance.

Flow
CF, perhaps this image I snapped can clear things up:

It's a satellite with an overlay of 200mb (39,000ft) streamlines. I don't see any NE flow southeast of florida, winds are blowing from SW-NE - outflow from Isabel. Is that what you meant?
But look a bit lower for a better idea of steering currents (500mb - 18,000ft):

The FIRST trof is indicated on the image above. It's not the one that finally carries the storm off to the NW-NNW, it just started the movement of Isabel NW today. The next trof is off the image to the west.

I clearly see a northeast flow in the upper levels off the southeast coast of Florida, to the west-southwest of Isabel. Sorry for bringing it up.
How about the high pressure behind the surface cold front?
When there was a high north of a cold front with Claudette (and I believe Erika, too)... "she" moved due westward [just about] because of the clockwise flow around the high.
Aquawind, thank you for liking this thread.
