Steve McCauley mentions snow but not a big event. I'll take whatever.
An Arctic Cold Front is on schedule to arrive next Monday night into Tuesday followed by subfreezing temperatures, a biting north wind and even a chance for snow on New Year's Eve. It does not look like a major snow event, but it will be something interesting to talk about nonetheless.
So after a very mild December, it looks like 2014 will be ending on a very chilly note. 'bout time, right?

No! Don't give him coal. He will just use it to make a fire to keep all the cold and snow away! Send him blocks of ice.

Well like clock work the 12z gfs shows no winter precip for the gulf coast now. Of course that would be after the cmc and euro come onboard showing it. Guess tomorrow it will show a blizzard for the south.

Re: Texas Winter 2014-2015
Knowing that models notoriously under forecast the Arctic intrusions here in Texas I am wondering what we will see. Without taking a long look at the models(time restraints) I would say the big kicker, at least for us in SE TX will be how strong the trough is and its' positioning as the cold air will be in place. We know we will have the shortwaves coming across the State during the period we are talking about

Merry Christmas to the S2k board from a long time lurker and infrequent poster. Reading this board has been an inspiration to me over the years to learn more about model reading and meteorology in general. Weather is a hobby for me, as I have an IT degree, but I find they often overlap.
I wouldn't get caught up on the GFS run at the surface. It doesn't ring true to me that, with a strong Arctic front coming down in late Dec, freezing temps would only make it to central TX.

Definately true. Often I hear of forecasts "catching up" to the speed and lower temps of arctic fronts when they end up on the move down here. The airmasses tend to hang around too before modifying, especially with cloud cover and precip.
Merry Christmas from me too!:)

Both the 12z EURO and the 12z GFS stick the significant wintry precip out in West Texas.
