Too bad we can't organize a field trip to Long Island, NY right about now.

So let me get this straight, I leave for 2 days and while I'm gone the models show mega winter storms and blizzards for Texas, but then as I come back it seems as if wxman has regained control of the models eliminating that awesome forecast and replacing it with 80 degree weather
Wxman you can have your fun from May through October if you let us have out 2 ft of snow this weekend
Though I guess that wouldn't be too fair for everyone else since there seems to be a pretty good chance I'll be studying Meteorology at Ohio State next fall, but dang it I want to see one more snow storm in Texas before I leave for college.

The cold anomalies are due mostly to cooler-than-normal highs due to the persistent clouds & rain. In order to get really cold in Texas there needs to be cold air in western Canada. The current and projected pattern doesn't indicate any extreme cold into western Canada. When Bastardi says "the cold is coming", I'm sure he's talking about his house and the northeast U.S., not Texas.
I didn't say very cold air has been plunging down the Plains, but I would challenge your assertion that only clouds/rain were responsible for the negative temp anomalies in Texas. Clearly colder than normal air was also involved. The departure from normal in Texas this month was more than just a couple of degrees. And my point was that to say all cold air impacting the CONUS hasn't just been a persistent cold trough to our northeast. However I completely agree with your comments about the origins of Texas' "real cold" air.

Just talked to a friend in Nashua, New Hampshire and he is not looking forward to early next week. If only we could see a blizzard like what's coming up there down here. That would be amazing. He referred to this upcoming blizzard as, and I quote, "white poop". Send it down to Texas please. I lived in New Hampshire from 74-80 and have vague recollections of the Blizzard of 78. Snowdrifts halfway up our two-story house and my father was stranded at an airport nearby. Maybe in Manchester. I was only four or five years old, but I remember watching the news out of Boston with my mother. Boston got hit pretty hard. One of the reasons I love winter weather so much stems from living in New Hampshire and Philly for eight years before moving back to Texas in 1982.

As a side note with the spring storm season approaching I thought I would post this site. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman Oklahoma is going to have classes available on site and online each Tuesday, Feb 3 thru April 21st from 7:30 to 9p.m. Don't worry if you can't view it live it will also be archived. It looks like a great opportunity.

Well, sure, the air has been colder than normal. But it hasn't been bitter cold responsible for January running 5.5F below normal (Houston). Our lows have averaged 39 (4 deg below normal) and our highs 55 (8 deg below normal). We've had only 2 light freezes since mid November (none in December). Lots of clouds and rain have kept our highs way below normal.
I hear there will be a bit of a snow storm in the northeast Monday night/Tue. I don't think anyone wants that kind of snow here.

Re: Texas Winter 2014-2015

Can you imagine Austin or Houston with 2 feet of snow and 60 mph?! LOL. We'd be stranded until the snow melted. Ah ... that kind of blizzard is a little too rich for even my blood. I grew up with that stuff.

Not soon enough. Ready for the golf courses to green up and the fish to come out of their winter patterns. Would much rather play golf in the 90's than in the cloudy, windy, cold 40's and 50's.

All of you GFS model huggers need to take a deep breath....it's in its loopy stage. Both the Euro and Canadian models now have a MAJOR winter storm in the southern plains for next weekend. WAY too early to write this event off....

Just out of curiosity, how seriously do you take the Canadian during hurricane season? Also the euro has been horrible this winter.

Don't really follow during hurricane season but the 6-7 day range on GFS almost always gets followers in a dither during the winter

Don't forget the GFS was upgraded on Jan 14. We don't know yet how it will behave for the hurricane season.
