Texas Winter 2014-2015

I wore short sleeve and shorts today. Tomorrow playing golf and will be even warmer. Guarantee the cool snap the gfs is advertising in 10 days from now will turn a lot warmer as we get closer to early February. Its done that all winter. Just killed a mosquito that was flying around inside and landed on my head, pretty good size one as well. Also crawfish season has already started down here and expecting a really excellent one at that. Don't get those with unseasonably or below average cold winters.

I haven't seen any model runs indicating prolonged cold in Alaska & NW Canada. It moves in then moves out fast. Hard to get really cold down here with that pattern. I thought we'd have more ice events and extreme cold along the Gulf coast this winter. It's not looking like that will verify.

Forecast models can change or defy them.

Hmm, Both The GFS and CMC is showing some rap around snow for parts of North Texas and North East Texas after the rain this weekend.

Snowy Palo Duro Canyon from the air is absolutely stunning. I was lucky enough to see it as well on a flight to Sacramento a few years ago

I was looking back at posts from last Wed-Thu talking about the big snow event across NE and north-central Texas this coming weekend (according to the GFS). Now it looks to be another panhandle event. One GFS run had temps in the mid to lower teens across the Dallas area for this coming weekend. Nope, not going to happen.

Now the GFS thinks NEXT week will be the big snow event that catches the Dallas area, maybe down to central Texas. Is it correct now? It's too early to rule out that possibility due to uncertainty about the amount of cold air that moves south out of Canada next week. For now, I'd agree that things could get "interesting" across Texas late next week, but I'm not expecting anything to happen just yet. The Euro, by the way, has no snow across Texas late next week. Temps well above freezing across the Dallas area, too. It's been right the past 2-3 events, though even it was too snowy for Texas (outside of the panhandle).

So how much snow for Amarillo this weekend? I'm considering a drive up there just so I can see what snow looks like again.

Drove through there last Friday. May have been more snow on the ground there then the base of Crested Butte right now. I'll be driving through Amarillo again on Saturday. My buddys brand new truck has his wheels stolen the week before our trip here so naturally he bought some brand new rims and bigger tires. Have a feeling that we will be putting them to the test this weekend.

Kinda depressing that there is a chance that i see snowflakes fall only in the Panhandle of Texas after spending a week at 9500 ft in Colorado.

The GFS is showing some of these blast with a bit more velocity down the spine of the Rockies, but honestly, still to far out to take it seriously. Prepared for more cold rain.

What is going on with the crazy 06Z GFS 300-350 hours out? Shows freezing rain across central and south Texas, snow in the north, and heavy rain/storms in south Texas. Another teaser. But fun to look at. How do you post images here again to show what I'm looking at? I put the link.

6Z GFS going crazy with very heavy snow west of I-45 across Texas maxing out with 20 inches around San Marcos according to AmWx's algorithm two weeks from now. If that happens then Austinites should be banned from complaining about missing out on snow for a few years especially if I get nothing out of it like the GFS is showing. It holds the cold over western Texas from hour 300 through the end of the run. Of course the ensembles do not show anything near as cold or wet. At least there are some storms to track again unlike the weekend's runs of purely mild weather.

For next winter, at least!

He already got to Luke Portawalker this winter. The rest of us are next if we don't join in on the rebellion!

I didn't realize that the temperature hit 81 degrees in Houston yesterday. Now THAT'S winter weather! If it gets any warmer I might be able to take off my coat. Looks like a big snow storm for Pennsylvania next Monday (Groundhog Day). No shadow for him means winter is over! Maybe we should start a winter 2015-2016 thread talking about possible snow in Texas NEXT winter?
