That's really surprising! Making most of what's left of winter there.

What I'm really noticing here is the sleet is becoming a sheet of ice underneath the pellets on top of them. Especially on the street when a car passes by and it refreezes.

Exactly what I am seeing, its a very solid sheet of solid ice on the concrete as if the sleet has melted into a tomb of ice.

Was 30.6 at the PWC when I left the house at 8:20 a.m. Got to downtown and it was 34. Patchy drizzle on the way in. My car windshield was iced a bit but saw no icing on bridges. I think that will change in the next 6-8 hours.

So we got hriverajr reporting snow in Del Rio, we have the 6z GFS and 0z Euro showing re-development of precip over much of Texas late today/tonight. I'm thinking this event is just getting going.

No need for meteograms today ... heh ... a simple look outside will tell you plenty. Old Man Winter is back in Texas and he seems a bit cranky!

We were just discussing whether it would be any value for UH to launch a balloon. I argued that a balloon over Houston wouldn't be of much value, as the key question is temperatures right at the surface, not aloft. We know it's very warm aloft (near 60) - nowhere close to freezing in the lower few thousand feet. Similar for A&M. There is a sub-freezing layer over CLL this morning, but it is quite shallow with temps in the 42-45 range at 850mb (5000ft). Balloon launch there might identify whether the sub-freezing layer near the surface is thicker or thinner, helping with the forecast of sleet or freezing rain.

I'd really like to see a Dallas area sounding, but that's not going to happen.

I like your thinking and I hope you're right. Going to be a fun day to watch. People out driving need to be careful and stay safe.

Temps holding around 31, but roads are still white from heavy periods of sleet. Things well really get bad when the temp drops. Even had some snow mixing in. Still for a few hours of off and on sleet and snow. Then maybe light freezing rain later. Can't wait for the snow Wednesday.

Which is why I believe many schools will close tomorrow as well, I think they should announce it this evening. As mentioned in a previous post any melting is problematic because it becomes a sheet of ice under over night.

So I'm a bit confused here, we could now get snow on Wednesday too? Could that cause Wednesday's temps to be colder?
