Isabel going to be a major deal once again

#1 Postby John » Tue Sep 16, 2003 3:57 pm

Hurricane Isabel is beginning to feel the steering flow setting up here, imagery strongly suggests the trof scheduled next in line is really going to dig deep into the Gulf of Mexico, this in part should Nudge the enough Ridging over Isabel to restore the Venting process lost the last few day's. It is still not clear but my best guess is that some rapid strengthening is going to begin here very soon, Isabel will become a Major Hurricane well before land fall. Isabel should really be on the move later tonight so preparations in the Hurricane Watch area should be rushed to completion.

I agree totally...a very large and severe hurricane...in the mold of September 1938, September 1944, Hazel, and Hugo.

Is it true that when the Hunters went in, the plane sucked in alot of salt water and they had to head back? I heard this on my local station. The DJ's also said that the eye at one time was 400 miles wide!!

400? Can't imagine it. I drive 1100 miles from here to KY for Christmas. It's hard to imagine a hurricane with an eye the size of about 1/3 that distance. That's pretty big.

Maybe in circumference? But even that seems to be pushing it.

We have a lot of family in NC, some in Pittsboro area, and some near Camp Lejuene. We'll be watching and waiting --- and praying. Some of our kin went through Hugo, so they are getting prepared.

Of course the eye of Hurricane Isabel was never 400 miles wide. The worse place to get weather information from is DJ's on FM radio stations. Even if they are joking, which they shouldn't be doing anyway.

The DJs are mistaken -- at least about the eye width. The largest the eye became was about 40-50 miles wide when it was annular. I think the entire storm itself might be 400 miles wide.
