New Bern NC meets Isabel updated during storm

Pebbles had an idea that I should make a log of how things are here as things progress with Isabel and thought it was a good idea. So here goes... I will update throught the storm

I am actually going to be 6 miles down river from New Bern and 18 miles up the Neuse river from the ICW

Sept 17 11:30 EST

I am getting ready to drop the computer and move with it to another more safe location. I live in trailor and won't chance riding out hurricanes here.

It has warmed up from last nights cool temps. Beautiful and sunny with just a hint of a light breeze, but if you look up, you can see the clouds moving kinda fast. On the local doppler the outer rainbands are just starting to show up. Well Isabel is on her way.

Hubby just called to say on his way from work to grab the final load of stuff being moved... which includes me and the puter so better get off this thing and get it dropped down to move.

BTW: He also said there is already a rise in the local creeks off the Neuse river, no doubt the first signs of a rise as a result of Isbabel's approach.

Well I am nowt safe at my new location and have the computer up and running. Have a back up electrical supply so if/when it goes out can still post and keep up with what is going on.

The sun is gone, the sky is cloundy and gray and it has gotten muggy. Breeze has picked up and can spell the salt in the air. Some banding clouds can be seen moving across the sky. Took a quick trip over to the marina (Fairfield harbor on the Neuse River) here and the few boaters who are docked there are tied down and waiting to see what happens like the rest of us. Talked to one, and he said there was definately a rise in the water there since this morning. Small little waves on the water there. The geese which usually run around the ponds here are hunkerd down behind the bushes.
LoL... guess they know Isabel is on her way too.

Hehe thanks for the update..was getting a tad worried if you were settled in yet or not...for those of you who don't know NCBird is my mom

... Kinda a convenient way to keep in touch and feel like I am there without having to actually BE there. Plus now I don't have to ring the phone off the hook to make sure everything is going ok..probably a big plus for her and the Dad *winks and giggles*

Well the weather station is set up and thought I would pass on some readings.

Temp: 75F
wind: N 19
highest gust: 28
no rain yet

Local reports are saying New Bern could see the worst flooding it has seen in a very long time.... guess I won't be going into town for awhile.

As a side note: Both the dogs are hiding in thier beds and won't even come out when I call them which is very strange behavior for them.

Still fairly quiet here but rainbands are moving in.

Temp: 73
Wind has been staying at around N 18
Gusts are pretty regularly in the high 20's with the highest so far tonight being 31

No rain yet.

Going to take a walk over to the marina in a bit with my husband to see how the river is doing and will let you know in my next post.

Light rain started about 15 minutes ago and it was a little beezey on our walk to the marina. The Neuse river is up about 2 feet above what it normally is.

Temp, wind speed and gusts are still running the same as my 10:30 post.

As a side note: Dogs have become increasingly nervous and will occationally let out a little whimper. It is also my husbands and I Anniversary today, and he has proclaimed to me standing with arms wide open "Look what I got for you honey".... LOL... hmmmmm wonder if he ment he saved me from the mighty cat 5 Isabel use to be (no better leave that to certain preachers to proclaim)... he better not be thinkin this gets him out of a present.

Light rain contiues. Winds have picked up a bit and gusts are making the tree tops bend a bit. River now has small little waves in it and has come up just a little more. This is notable because the tide should have started turning and it should be going out and getting lower.

Has started to get pretty nasty outside. Heavy rain and at times we can hear the howling of the wind gusts in the house. Sunrise has not come yet so it is still hard to get a real good look of whats going on, but the closer trees are really starting to get whipped about. To nasty out to walk in the dark to the marina to see what the river is doing but when it gets light my husband and I will put on our rain gear and go fight the wind gust.

Glad you like it. Gives me something to do to keep from getting board and keeps my little Pebbles up to date on how we are.

Daylight is here. You can see the bands moving across the sky and the trees getting whipped around. Have lost our cable TV and electric has been flickering on and off. I am actually surprised it is still on. Ventured out to the marina and the water is almost covering the boat slip docks so the Neuse River is up about 3.5 or 4 ft already. Some roads close to the water have started to flood. Lots of pinecone and small branches being blown around but no trees down yet.

Keep staying safe Mama Bird. Just realized that this is the only way I can contact you with the computer going..*phone goes beep beep beep* It's very reassuring to see your posting and interesting to see how conditions have gone down hill.

Can you include the pond levels in relation to where you are staying? I know most won't know much about that but am wondering if the water will reach the last step before the door as it did with Floyd. Thanks and *hugs* to you both.

Yes Pebbles I am staying safe. Just came back from a trip around the resort and to check on the Marina. Rains are extreamly heavy now. Roads are starting to flood and a few tree's have now came down. Also several light poles around the ponds have came down. New Bern city lost their power and figured by the time we got back I would be hooking up the auxilary power but it is still on. The Neuse river has rose about another 8 inches since the 7:30 post and the Marina docks are now under water. So others will know what I am talking about when I refer to the ponds Pebbles asked about, the resort building are set around man made ponds where the guest can fish in. When the Neuse river (about 200 yards away) floods the water gets into the ponds and up they come. The Nuese has not come out of her banks yet at the Marina, but just from the rain the fishing piers on the ponds are under water.

I spoke to her about 1/2 hour after she posted last. She was getting some hot food in her before the electric went out and hopefully a quick shower. Was an interesting phone call to say the least. She was on the cordless and the power flickered in and out so I had to call her back (they hooked up the regular phone line after that).

A nasty band had just come over her at that point and heard a couple of exclamations from her before she began explaining that the trees were bending way over. Also we were talking about the fact that this storm is coming in during daylight hours at it's peak..all the other ones in the past several years have been at night...She said she almost would rather have the night ones where you can't see what's going on..me I'm just the opposite.

If she doesn't post again soon I may just call her again. Looks like from radar they may end up riding that eye wall.

OK got NCbird on the phone, her power is out and her new screen is too strong for the power converter. I am going to type what she says...

The outer eye wall is just now getting to the outer banks. Expecting to have it hit us in about an hour. They are saying 80 to 90 mph sustained winds in the eyewall. Neuse river is up over it's banks, now flowing into the ponds. Looks like it won't be long to the ponds are out over their banks also. Wind speed is 43 mph. Gusts in high 50's. Max gust so far 61.
Several more trees are down. Light posts are down... bad band going through right now nasty wind. It's getting very nasty, very quick. We may have to move the cars because of flooding up in the parking space.

Will call her again and update you all later.
