Hello Barbara,Gusty and rest of fellow Caribbean friends. In Puerto Rico already some bands of heavy rain have been moving thru the island but things will pickup in intensity and coverage as well more windy later today.Let's see how much rain falls to make a big dent to the drought.

TERRIBLE PHOTOS AND VIDEOS COMING OUT OF DOMINICA of flood damage due to the passage of Tropical Storm Erika last night. Douglas Charles Airport and Canefield Airports flooded. Many rivers, Roseau, Check Hall, Melville Hall and Canefield etc burst their banks. In Roseau, blocked drains and bridges blocked by tree trunks overflowing. Lots of damage.,

Dominicans have been advised by Acting Prime Minister Rayburn Blackmoore to remain indoors until the inclement weather has subsided.

“The primary responsibility of any responsible government is to ensure the safety of its wonderful people”.

“And in that regard therefore, we are advising that people stay home until the keep clear is given,” Minister Blackmoore advised.

There have been reports of severe flooding in the Capital City Roseau, Castle Comfort, Grand Bay, Wotten Waven, Canefield and several other communities.

There are also reports of houses being washed away by the flood waters in Canefield and In the Mahaut Constituency.

Additionally, several roads became impassible by virtue of flooding and landslides.

Communication has also been impacted as several telephone poles have been downed.

There is no electricity or water in Various parts the island.

DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK

At 200 PM AST (1800 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Erika was
located near latitude 16.5 North, longitude 63.8 West. Erika is
moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 km/h). A turn toward the
west-northwest is forecast later today, and this general motion
should continue for the next 48 hours. On the forecast track, the
center of Erika will move near the Virgin Islands later today,
move near or over Puerto Rico tonight, and move near or over the
Dominican Republic on Friday.

Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 45 mph (75 km/h) with
higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next
48 hours.

Tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km)
to the east of the center.

The estimated minimum central pressure is 1006 mb (29.71 inches).


HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND

WIND: Tropical storm conditions are expected to continue over
portions of the warning area in the Leeward Islands for the next
few hours, and reach the Virgin Islands later today and Puerto
Rico tonight. Tropical storm conditions are possible in the watch
area in the Leeward Islands through early this afternoon. Tropical
storm conditions could reach portions of the watch area in the
Dominican Republic on Friday, and the southeastern Bahamas and Turks
and Caicos Islands late Friday and Friday night.

RAINFALL: Erika is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations
of 4 to 8 inches with maximum amounts of 12 inches possible across
portions of the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico,
the Dominican Republic, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the
southeastern Bahamas through Saturday.

Current situation:

This afternoon at 3 p.m., the center of tropical storm ERIKA was located more than 180 km South of Saint Martin; She continued moving westward. The main thunderstorm activity is located far enough to the South and East of the center of the disturbance.

Forecasts:

The risk of heavy rains in stormy character moves now. Heavy downpours can however occasionally occur in the next few hours and the next night at distant periphery of Erika.

Possible gusts locally reaching 60 to 90 km/h, durant the showers.

Observed data:

At 12AM a gust wind at 88 km/h at Saint Barthélemy.

Looks like Msbee that minors effects could be felt tonight as the system track more souther and west. Whereas, seems that only small amounts of water should spread on your area. Let's wait and see how ERIKA could try to bring a good bunch of rain

According to a recent newscast, a radio station in Dominica has stated that about 20 people are believed to have perished as a result of flooding and mudslides. Sections of that island got over 15 inches of rain from Erika.

Current situation:

Tropical storm 'ERIKA', located at 5 PM 290 km west of Guadeloupe, is now headed for the Greater Antilles.

It influences over very little, the time of the next hours on Martinique. The sky will main veiled, but rainy activity will be limited to a few showers.

Wind everywhere a Southeast component, which has the effect a net amortization of the

Sea to the Caribbean coast.

Data observed during the episode:

On the last 24 hours, the blade of water radar indicates heights between 70 and 90 mm

on the centre of the island as well as on the North Atlantic, between 25 and 50 mm on the North Caribbean and the

region of Saint Joseph. The South of Martinique remained more aloof, between 10 and 30 mm, between 180 and 300 mm in the canal and on the South of Dominica.

0 m wave height 80 on the Caribbean coast with maximum waves of 1 m 30 to 1 m 60 in morning.

South wind gusts were strong: 52 kt at the Caravelle.

Guadeloupe has been concerned by the effects of tropical storm Erika since last night when it suddenly started to rain at about 2 a.m. first striking the tiny island of La Desirade and extending then to the East of Grande-Terre. Heavy rainfalls came along with loud and lasting thunder all night long and strong sustained winds and gusts. Rain kept on falling all the day long until now, which caused sudden floods in Basse-Terre by submerging thus some other floodplains.



Lots of trees have been reported to be strewing the ground and a few countryside roads, but fortunately no injured people have been reported to us. As most of the population was prepared consequently to the previous warning of hurricane Danny. The French authorities and weather services have only declared a medium warning as an "Orange Alert", while the French island of Saint-Martin was under a "Red Alert" warning.


The sea was very rough and has mostly hit the vulnerable sandy seashores and beaches of the atlantic side during the night and now striking the Caribbean sea side.

Most of the stores and public services stayed open and operational as people could keep having a normal life this Thursday. Erika is now moving away as only a drizzling rain is falling from a very cloudy grey sky here in Le Moule.

PHILIPSBURG – Prime Minister Marcel Gumbs, chairman of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), in an update on Thursday afternoon, August 27, says, based on an assessment of the current weather situation regarding Tropical Storm Erika:

“Country Sint Maarten remains under a Tropical Storm Warning. The country will continue to experience some gusty to near gale force winds from time to time, and the community is advised to be cautious when outdoors. Erika could still produce some heavy rainfall tonight and motorists should exercise caution when driving. Residents in hillside areas should also exercise caution after heavy rainfall.

- Restaurants and casinos can reopen for business this evening, Thursday.

- Schools are to reopen on Friday, August 28.

- Friday, August 28 will also be a normal business day.

- Government offices are to reopen on Friday, August 28.

- Motorists should avoid driving in low lying areas as there is the potential for flooding in the event of heavy rainfall;

- Persons living in flood prone areas should remain vigilant in the event of heavy rainfall.

“I would like to thank the broadcast media for their cooperation in spreading the information to our community about the two storm systems that approached the Leeward Islands within the past week. I call on the populace to remain vigilant because the hurricane season is not yet over. We still have three more months to go through.

“I would like to thank the public, our visitors, and the business community for their understanding and cooperation. The measures that have been taken were of a precautionary nature in order to ensure the safety of the community and our visitors,” Marcel Gumbs, Prime Minister of Sint Maarten stated on Thursday afternoon.

I am so saddened by the terrible news out of Dominica.
Gusty, it could have been like that in Guadeloupe so easily. We are all vulnerable to events like this.
St Maarten received almost no rain from Erika...just light rain showers.
We did receive high winds. And the seas are raging.
The airport at 7 PM was reporting winds from the ESE (120 degrees) at 26 MPH (23 KT) gusting to 39 MPH (34 KT)

Hoping PR gets some much-needed rain but no flash flooding. Cycloneye, be careful!
