Is NCEP's Server Down?

#1 Postby wxman57 » Fri Sep 19, 2003 8:14 pm

I haven't been able to reach NCEP's server from home. It was working from work earlier today. Maybe the power outages on the east coast have their server down again? See if this link works for you, pls...

wxman57, it works only if your on a local server with them ... everyone else outside of the area can't get through to the NCEP, including myself ... however, there are some alternative sites that are working (such as weather.cod.edu) for the GFS ...

Anyways, FWIW, a lot of sites aren't loading ... the IWIN site being one ...

Hop down

#8 Postby wxman57 » Fri Sep 19, 2003 8:25 pm

Since it works for some and not others, I would assume that we're all not taking the same "hops" to their server. One point along the path from my home must be down. Others accessing their site from a different area may bypass this hop and get in ok.

Thanks for trying the link.

This link works fine for me

http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/

If you are having problems it could also be that your DNS has not updated or needs to be updated. This is up to your ISP.

Ok, Aaron, I'm computer illiterate. What is DNS? I haven't been able to access that site since yesterday. If I need to contact my ISP, I need to know what I am going to ask them first!

Yep, that could be the problem, too. Many ISPs don't regularly update their DNS server listings. Could be NCEP's changed after the outage produced by Isabel.

Now, how would I call TIme-Warner Cable and try to explain this problem to them, as it seems their tech support is generally clueless.....

I'm on the phone with Warner Cable now. The person to whom I'm speaking actually MAY have a clue. We'll see..
