Here is a view from Himawari 8 of the big cyclone that may approach historic levels in the Bering in about 24 hours from now nearly all guidance dips below 930mb, bombogenesis. It may very well reshuffle the weather pattern across the NHEM, at the very least North America. All kinds of weather warnings in the Aleutians hurricane force winds, freezing ocean spray etc etc. Wouldn't be surprised to see an "eye" like feature with such a wound up deep system like this.

Rough weather and seas at Unalaska the next 24-48 hours. Repeat conditions of the Nuri Bomb for them

I've seen pictures of cars near the coast completely frozen in water, is that the cause of freezing ocean spray?

gpsnowman wrote:That is some good stuff, Ntwx. I was a nine year old living in San Antonio when the 1983 outbreak occurred and vaguely remember the cold. If memory serves me right no winter precip fell on San Antonio during the cold spell. Even at nine I was interested in weather. If any San Antonio folks can confirm this, a quick snowfall in late 1981 or early 1982 fell and my second grade teacher let her class have an extra recess to play in the snow saying it had not snowed here in years. Anyway, the year we moved back to Dallas it snowed a foot in San Antonio in 1985. But winter 84-85 in the DFW area had two good snowfalls, one in January and early February. Ahhhh the memories.

It was January 1982 and, while not very robust, it was the first "real" snow since the early '70s. Now the '83 event was just nasty and depressing, no snow but lots of dirty, ugly, slushy ice in the streets which stayed there for days. No magical snow, no glassy iced trees, just all that dirty brown slush and a desolate grey cold that simply would not quit.

:uarrow: Thanks richtrav! I remember it was snowing at a pretty good clip while in the schoolyard playing. But when school was dismissed the sun was out and all the snow had melted.

It's toasty here today, the clouds help a bit though, good thing is I don't need a jacket for my walk to go work out later.

If anyone is surprised, the GFS has lost the cold around Christmas completely... last couple runs have a wet, possibly stormy setup for Christmas weekend.

Southern jet active but zero cold air

Yet the 12Z Euro suggests near freezing temperatures next Friday in SE Texas.

For December it likely is though the rest of the month will not be near as warm and stormier than it has been so far. The process of the PV breaking down is going to start next week and that will lead to a -AO dominated latter half of winter so winter is coming. December was expected to be warm with maybe enough STJ to keep it close to average.

Great post Ntx. Look how shallow that cold air is. I know temps were below freezing here for a few days but by looking the the 500 MB heights, it would be hard to tell.

Nothing like highs near 80 to put me in the Christmas mood! 12Z GFS has no freezes for Dallas down to Houston through December. I wouldn't bet on that yet, but December is looking a good bit warmer than normal across Texas. South wind and a high in the mid to upper 70s on Christmas Day?

On the other hand, the Euro is quite a bit colder for next weekend...

I'm afraid your community appears to have been hit hard. I've seen reports of at least 50 homes damaged. Have you checked in with your family? I hope everyone is okay.

SE Texas also has had some 'nader activity today. Saw some images of damage near Willis. Hope everyone stays safe tonight!

Were there warnings before it hit? Sounds like it was short lived, but it happened in a subdivision.
