Mid January is the annual winter cancel period. Happens every year here :D

It is pretty warm outside in the sun today... :x

But I remember hitting 80 one day in January last year... :P

FWD on Saturday:

THE FRONT WILL ACCOMPANY ANOTHER SHORTWAVE
TROUGH...WHICH SHOULD PROVIDE ENOUGH MOISTURE AND LIFT FOR
WIDESPREAD LIGHT PRECIPITATION ON SATURDAY. MODEL SOUNDINGS APPEAR
CONDUCIVE FOR AT LEAST A CHANCE OF SNOW ACROSS THE NORTHERN TIER
OF COUNTIES...AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO INDICATE A RAIN-SNOW MIX
ALONG THE RED RIVER. SNOW IS POSSIBLE FARTHER SOUTH...BUT AT THIS
TIME IT LOOKS LIKE LOW LEVEL TEMPERATURES WILL BE WARM ENOUGH FOR
MOST OF THIS TO MELT AND FALL AS RAIN. IF FUTURE MODEL RUNS
INDICATE A COLDER INTRUSION OF ARCTIC AIR...WE COULD EXTEND THE
CHANCES OF SNOW FARTHER SOUTH.
EITHER WAY...IT APPEARS THAT
ACCUMULATIONS WOULD BE MINOR.

I miss my heat miser avatar. If someone lets me host it on his/her web server I'll keep my hand off the thermostat for the remainder of the winter. If not, well, the 18z 114hr GFS panel on Tropical Tidbits will be your big Dallas area snow event for this winter.

Am I hearing this correctly? Winter has been cancelled? ;-)

I will say this, back in the fall my biggest fear was that the monster El Nino would overwhelm the EPO north pacific warm watesr. So far we haven't seen any 1050+ HP of the past several, nor have the models really shown any on a consistent basis as we have been used to since 2013. Not surprising given the Nino climo but I was hoping for more impressive HP's. The strongest ones have barely cracked 1040hp but this is normal for a typical winter. So thus far the arctic outbreaks have not been that impressive..

Tropical forcing is a bit too far east in the Pacific i think. Like you said a few weeks ago, need the Low to be near the Aleutian islands region to pump up the heights to the NW territories. Havent looked at a map of where the Nino anomalies are. We still have a lot of football left for winter though.... Sort of.

The 500mb pattern actually hasn't been terrible. There just hasn't been persistent cold anomalies in Canada, or much of anywhere in North America (like really cold; -30s and -40s; -20s in Minnesota as the coldest on the continent isn't impressive). Just a lot of warmer air everywhere (probably Nino induced). Big HP's are associated with those big cold anomalies, cause and effect.

GFS still sticking to it's ideas. Between it and the Euro one has to eventually cave, it's only 3 days out.
