I love snow but I hate the cold. We still have a shot at snow here in Houston, but there needs to be some colder air moving out of Canada for that to happen.

My main hope for the East Coast storm is that it covers Jim Cantore up completely.

Yeah, he is walking all over DC. Love the beard...LOL

Looking at the radar in the VA area right now as a weather geek is actually quite fascinating right now. The dynamics of this storm look amazing right now. Seeing the bands of convergence come on shore is pretty cool.

Makes you wonder what Houston radar would've looked like in 1895. Probably that kind of banding coming onshore from the Gulf moving N and NW due to a slowed ULL in waves
I know right :(. One can only dream. Is there an analysis on what that storm could have looked like? The gulf never disappoint in providing exciting dynamics when a low gets nearby.

Coldest morning of the Winter Season here in NW Harris County. I dropped to 30F and stayed below freezing for 3 hours. Heavy frost all the way to the ground and both bird baths are frozen solid. A couple of things to monitor particularly across S Central and SE Texas this week will be the Tuesday timeframe and as Ntxw mentioned is the first days of February for all of Texas. Another fairly good shot of cold air drops S Tuesday with a Coastal low/trough is attempting to develop and a rather robust upper air disturbance arrives. All of the ensembles as well as the CPC Day 11+ Super Ensemble blend are suggesting some very cold anomalies developing across NW/Western/Central Canada which we have not seen so far this season. That coincides with the AO plunging back into negative territory after going positive this week. The other Teleconnection Indices are advertising a Hemispheric Pattern that may be conducive to delivering a strong shot of cold air out of Western Canada and the deep Western trough may well pull the sub tropical jet back North closer to Texas just in time for our climatically favored wintry mischief month of February. Perhaps those signals brought back bipolar wxman57. Who knows...

I hope this storm in early February won't just be a Panhandle Hooker, it would stink for you guys and for me, looks like there's so much potential with the storm and I would hate for it to be just rain. :(

We bottomed out at 31 this morning. Frost everywhere. My brother in DC texted some photos about 8am this morning. First words he put were "OMG."
Two feet of snow was piled up against his back door. Still coming down. He still had power.

I texted him photos of our frost.

Unfortunately that is a very difficult find. Anything before 1948 records. This is the best I could do for 1895, note that the maps say 95 which presents 1895 not 1995.

500mb Valentines day

Image

Surface pressures, there was a massive high pressed against the Rockies shoving cold air very far to the south. Notice the lower pressures in the Bay of Campache. Probably a sizable surface low in the central-western Gulf. I would guess maybe a 980-990 mb surface low or less.

Hey, it's not like we have any winter weather across Texas to talk about over the next couple of weeks. You can find reports from any past severe weather event at the Storm Prediction Center website. Here's the link to the archive:

Based on some of the medium range signals, it looks like we may need to keep an eye on the potential for severe weather again for the beginning of February.

And now you see our pain. When he goes bi-polar, it is like he is laughing at us. Just wait until he starts making competing forecasts. Oh the will tickle your funny bone. One post will be the hot one and the other, the cold one. Then, get this, he argues with himself. I need to go run. Sigh.

You think it bothers you? Try living only a few hundred miles north of a foot+ of snow :x

Amen. Watching all the coverage of the blizzard has made me winter envious. Just think, something like that is possible here if all the ingredients are mixed to 100 percent perfection. How tasty that would be. Come on Feb, deliver a monster storm.
