...TROPICAL STORM JUAN WILL BRING SWELLS INTO THE UNPROTECTED
COASTAL WATERS THIS WEEKEND...
TROPICAL STORM JUAN...LOCATED 175 MILES EAST SOUTHEAST OF BERMUDA AT
5 AM...MAY INTENSIFY SOME AS IT TRACKS TO THE NORTH NORTHWEST.
JUAN WILL LIKELY PASS A LITTLE EAST OF GEORGES BANK ON SUNDAY...AND
THEN APPROACH THE CANADIAN MARITIMES LATE SUNDAY. EAST SOUTHEAST
SWELLS UP TO 5 FEET WILL BEGIN TO APPROACH THE OUTER COASTAL
WATERS...MAINLY SOUTH AND EAST OF NANTUCKET...LATE TONIGHT OR
SATURDAY MORNING. THE SWELLS WILL CONTINUE TO BUILD TO 6 TO 9 FEET
OVER THE OPEN COASTAL WATERS DURING SUNDAY. SINCE LONG PERIOD SWELLS
CAN GROW AS THEY APPROACH MORE SHALLOW WATER...OPERATORS OF SMALL
CRAFT SHOULD EXERCISE EXTRA CAUTION THIS WEEKEND NEAR THE APPROACHES
TO HARBORS AND INLETS...ESPECIALLY THOSE EXPOSED TO THE EAST OR
SOUTHEAST.
MARINERS PLANNING TRIPS TO THE OFFSHORE WATERS SHOULD MONITOR
CLOSELY THE LATEST ADVISORIES ON JUAN FROM THE TROPICAL PREDICTION
CENTER. THE EASTERN PORTION OF GEORGES BANK MAY BE IMPACTED BY
TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS ON SUNDAY.

There is the potential for high surf and dangerous rip currents this weekend
The combination of tropical storm Juan tracking offshore and an advancing cold front may bring high surf and dangerous rip currents this weekend. Tropical storm Juan, currently located 175 miles east southeast of Bermuda, is expected to slowly intensify as it tracks north northwest over the next 36 hours. East southeasterly swells are expected to rise as Juan tracks closer to the region. Swells from Juan are expected to rise between 4 to 6 feet over the open coastal waters by Saturday afternoon, then increase to 6 to 9 feet by Sunday evening. High surf and dangerous rip currents are possible during this time frame, especially along more susceptible east to southeast facing shore locations. Tides are expected to be astronomically high this weekend, so that minor splashover and minor beach erosion could occur during the times of high tide.
High swells and rip currents may continue on Monday, depending upon the progression of tropical storm Juan. The advancing cold front on Sunday is expected to keep the tropical system out to sea. tropical storm force winds created by Juan are expected to remain offshore. Mariners and swimmers should continue to listen to statements issued by the tropical prediction center, as well as the latest marine forecasts.
