ATL: MATTHEW - Post-Tropical - Discussion

The Weather Channel this morning was talking about how the most intense winds are concentrated in just a few miles of bands directly in the eyewall. Winds rapidly drop off to the point where Nassau 20 miles from the eyewall was barely getting 55mph sustained.

This is going to basically be like Charley. A 5 mile wide F3 tornado raking the coast from West Palm Beach to Jacksonville. Variations of just 5 miles could mean the difference between Cat 4/5 and TS/Cat 1. It's insane.

Worst case scenario continuing to unfold. My roommate wanted to evacuate back home.... To Melbourne. I convinced him to head north and west instead.

It has a torn-away inner core like Charley. That's why I'd hold off on category 5. I don't think the conditions are there but I could be wrong...

While true that west Nassau must have seen far worse conditions than east Nassau, I don't believe that anywhere in Nassau saw only 55mph sustained winds. I'm watching videos of clear hurricanes conditions out of even extreme east Nassau on Facebook right now.

john morales on nbc 6 miami really reducing effects for miami and broward..imo palm beach county much better too, it looked dicey 12 hours ago..good luck to our firends north, i hope it stays well offshore and nobody gets a direct hit

Just checking in. I'm a long time reader/lurker due to my interest in storms and my son living in Florida. We arrived in West Palm last weekend to see our son who lives here, and are bunkerng down with friends. Can't believe our timing to come from Australia to this. House we are in (Lake worth) is new build concrete and all the shutters are up so fingers crossed and best wishes to everyone in the state affected, especially here in PBC.

I don't know about only 55 mph substained, some of the videos I have seen they were definitely at hurricane force substained winds, with the most intense eastern side of the eyewall going over the western side of the Island. Also, the last reported reported hurricane force winds more than 50 miles from the eye.

This storm is much bigger than Charley. I have no doubt the most intense winds are in the eyewall which is why i'm still hopeful they eye stays just offshore..but even so the east coast is going to get creamed.

Yeah John just called the all clear for Broward and Dade... 60+ mph winds in Broward aren't necessarily all clear.
