Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
The western eyewall is whipping Cape Canaveral area pretty good, the good thing is that the strongest winds are located on the NE quadrant, Matthew started taking more of NW to NNW wobble again during the last couple of hours.

Daytona Beach webcam is absolutely getting pounded by heavy rain and winds sustained at least 40-60 mph with gusts near hurri cane force I would estimate. The eyewall is approaching from the south and southeast.

Camera should be located just north of Edgewater on this view.

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
I'm hoping it turns much more to the north really soon, otherwise on a track of 330-335 the eye will cross the coast somewhere around the FL-GA line.
I've been concerned about surge along the Sea Islands since yesterday, even though I thought the storm would come in much further south.

Yeah NDG there I has been a NW wobble the last couple of frames. I noticed that too. That always worries me as these wobbles west will bring that eyewall even closer to the coast. It is only 30 miles off the coast now.

Is this a west shift or wobble or are my eyes playing a trick on me with the barrier island that juts out?

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
It's my understanding that frictional forces can tend to "bend" a storm slightly to the left as it approaches the east coast of Florida...the wind on the north side of the storm is stronger than on the south side, so the north side of the storm is "pushing" toward the coast faster than the south side if "pulling" away from the coast.

I pray it is just a temporary wobble as any short shift or motion west of north puts Jacksonville or even extreme Southeast GA near the Florida-Georgia state line of being for a potential landfall.

Highest surge I've found was 3 feet above predicted tidal stage at trident pier at the cape.

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
Just checking in again, thanks for the welcome. Obviously we got lucky, I am glad we decided to stay and not head up to Orlando which we are booked into today.
Someone asked for my thoughts.
Obviously the eye was over 50 miles from us, so my observations was on the brush. Wind was not as scary as the winter fronts we get in Perth, they can be brutal (125km regularly). I did sleep through the worst though. So obviously with a circular system, there is a huge difference between being on the fringes and being in the eye.
The air was very tropical, dense and warm, which was unusual to me. Hopefully I wont see much damage when we venture out today. Thank you for getting us all through it.
