Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
My goodness. The full eyewall is only about 10- 15 miles off shore of Flagler Beach.
The eyewall is literally brushing the Northeast Florids coast.
56 mph gust in squalls just a moment ago.

I am no expert on that area, but I am familiar with what happens when A storm comes at the right angle to pile water against the coast prior to hitting with the full surge, having lived thru Katrina and Georges. We all know Katrina, but George was a large surge in Jackson and mobile counties and it was a cat 2. It really piled water into the bay's and bayous. Matt was a cat 4 south SC, and they are projecting 8 ft in SC. For ref, Hugo was 8 ft and it wasn't as good an angle as this is. I actually wonder if it will surpass that, esp in bayous and inlet where it piles up. Of course if it doesn't quite fully come in with RFQ it will limit that potential.
Edit: Gov Haley just said many people are not leaving barrier islands and imploring them to get off, that they WILL be inundated. Over 100 on Daniel island
Just curious. What model shows a Charleston landfall now?
I think most models are showing a VERY close pass and nhc new path has the forecast point pretty much right on top of Charleston. Although they all appear to not cross the coast fully. So it'll be very close.

Caution:
Surge escape routes blocked by massive trees in Ormond Beach.
I'm still moving along cautiously.

Although I have been a hurricane forecaster since 1980 that only means I've been wrong lots of times.

Pretty much all of them have either a direct Charleston landfall or so close that it's probably worth evacuating if you're those people on the barrier islands. Euro, GFS, GFDL, HWRF are the ones I was looking at. Charleston won't get a cat4 of course -- but they may get a pretty good pop from the NE quadrant of a Cat1/2.

Where did you see this? I saw 61 at the airport. This morning has been the worst it's been for Orlando. Strange that it wasn't when it was closest.

If you do a google image search for Daytona under water, the same image comes up from articles in 2009. Cantore should drop it from his Twitter.

Where are you seeing this? I have been trying to look and haven't found anything. Very worried about family and friends in Volusia and Flagler counties.
Thank you

Very concerning trends for the GA and SC coast. Some of these areas, especially between South of Charleston and Brunswick have never seen a real tropical storm in modern times.

Since the winds have shifted coming from northwest, we were looking out our back bathroom window. As we were watching, a huge gust came and whoosh the shed comes flying up
