Why watch the satellite to guess its heading when is so close to radar range?

Of course my guess, and this is just a guess, is that areas north of that, from about Kennedy Space Center north thru New Smyrna and Daytona, will see worse effects from this than Frances and JeAnne, as those storms hit much further south and looking at old radar picks it appears their worst weather stayed Melbourne south in those.

Viewing radar earlier today, I have to agree with you. At that point the West eyewall was directly over the Cape area, so I imagine the were getting pretty well blasted and with the current apparent track the same will probably be able to be said for areas North of there.

Amazingly, I still have my power. Mother Nature owes me this after my power was lost in T.S.Julia last month.

I don't feel the the radar is showing much in the way of wobbles with this setup. That's probably a good thing though because we tend to overreact on the wobbles.

Surge, and not wind, will be the big story first. Whoever has the misfortune of being at high tide with the center just south of them will see it worst, of course. For example, St. Augustine, now. Savannah to Charleston, roughly, will also have hell to pay tonight with surge on top of high tide shortly after midnight.

The other thing to keep an eye out for is freshwater flooding. It's already pretty wet in parts of the eastern Carolinas. As this weakens, I suspect the news will shift to flooding in SC and southern NC.

Looks like storm has begun to change directions, Florida got very lucky had this moved a little further west parts of the coast would have experienced hurricane force winds.

Radar seems to show Matt is going to see just how close he can get to the coast before he leaves the state

Morning to all, hope that those without power weather the storm well. Looks like the highest gust was 115 mph at Cape Canaveral. Could have been a lot worse for Florida.

They did and still are (the coast). Daytona and Smyrna beach have major damage and surge right now.

Heading slowly N on 95.

Although I have been a hurricane forecaster since 1980 that only means I've been wrong lots of times.

"Lucky"? Tell that the folks in St. Augustine right now. And parts of the Florida East Coast HAVE experienced hurricane force winds. Stop with these kinds of posts!

Yes, especially St. Augustine. It's going down hill there quick. My Grandparent's house is in the surge zone too.

Just took a look at radar through Weatherbug. I have to agree Matthew appears to have slowed considerably. What West eyewall there is is right on the coast now. I also think there appears to be burst of convection on the NE side of the eye and it appers to be wrapping around and tightening a little.

Some areas got hit hard, but Florida, as a whole, made out quite well.

St Augustine could get a pretty good lick from the western eyewall fairly soon based off the latest radar.

Keep in midn the plane doesn't always find the exact center so the left turn might not be real.
