Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
OBS from central FL - Evac'd from Cape Canaveral to east Orlando on Wed. Long and very loud early morning today at the "shelter house", but never lost power.
Initial reports from the brave (dumb?) people that stayed in my Cape Canaveral neighborhood: no power or water. Some large oak trees down blocking entry access gates, the main boulevard, and some cul-de-sacs. Best thing is no evidence of storm surge, no roofs off, and no visible structural damage.
Good luck to those north of me. Especially those of you in Nassau County and Jacksonville. Big concerns about storm surge moving north in the St John's River (one of the few rivers that runs south to north). All the rain drain off from the southern counties is accumulating.

WJXT 4 had to evacuate Downtown St. Augustine to a hotel near the train tracks by U.S. 1 (where the San- Sabastian River has overlapped the tracks).

For those wondering about twitter for updated info, it is better to get info from people you follow rather than searching for #matthew, as i suggested earlier, which is full of false tweets.
Eric Blake (NHC) is a great place to start. https://twitter.com/EricBlake12

I can say looking at local news that it's not good already and we are 3 hours from the eye still plus high tide coming. Not going to be good for a long time

Major flooding happening inland also along tidal St. Johns River inland from St. Augustine: http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrogra ... gage=rcyf1
Not sure how much of this is from rainfall.

Although I have been a hurricane forecaster since 1980 that only means I've been wrong lots of times.

My DIL's parents lost their power about an hour ago. St John's Bluff/Atlantic area. 32246 zip.
St Augustine underwater at least on the road next to the Castillo. It looked like river rapids swirling in and out of businesses on the street. Some guys doing a doc filmed it.

They got spared the worst of it. No real damage reports have come in from Lake that I have seen
Of course it only takes one tree on your house to change your perspective of worst

Street lights on, so looks like strong TS winds with maybe hurricane gusts... 80-100 mph gusts those lights are not on... So far seems like glancing blow for everybody along FL E coast...

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
Looking at water vapor sat image of entire country I just don't see how the trough is going to have enough positive tilt to keep this from hitting the coast from somewhere between now and North Carolina. To my untrained eye appears the trough dug deeper into Texas the models were showing and the high to the East of Matt has dug much more south then models were showing causing the trough to look like it will be about neutral as it connects with MAtt. Could be wrong but that is what I see when I look at it

Re: ATL: MATTHEW - Hurricane - Discussion
Frankly, this track is WORSE for north Florida and Georgia than had it actually made landfall. The north side, which is the dirty side, is pushing everything into the rivers and tributaries.

I think high tide is now along N. Florida coast, exacerbating the surge.
also negative tilted trough would turn the storm more toward the NW I believe (look at Sandy).
