Anyone have an idea of which previous storm caused the most damage or loss of life in the US without making a true landfall?

My thoughts are with everyone currently in the path of Matthew or those who were in the path of Matthew the past several day. . Those of us in the islands understand what it is like to go through the relentless battering of hurricane winds and rain. Being under attack from Mother Nature is no fun. And then comes the clean up for days and maybe even weeks.

A lot of people and places got bruised, and luckily after seeing Jamaica and Haiti we didn't get that type of catastrophe. It seems to mostly be downed trees, coastal and river flooding, some moderate damage which appears to be high-end TS and Cat 1 type of damage. There were some gusts in Eastern Florida into the Cat 2 range, but I don't think any were sustained. There have been some tornadoes and probably will be more today. I hope everyone on here made out okay beyond the inconveniences. Retirement is a near certainty in my opinion. We will find out if there is a part 2 or not.

In North Mt Pleasant SC. Currently in what appears to be what is left of eyewall. Heavy rain estimate winds of 30 gust to 50 it's. No structure damage in our neighborhood. All new construction so built to current code. Power currently on but has gone off for short periods.

Quick report from Wilmington near Carolina Beach:

Winds gusting to 50 or so sustained at 39 mph

Some reports of minor wind damage

No word on surge or flooding, but up the Cape Fear river rain caused flooding is happening

Power outages starting in a few spots

5 tornado warnings all around Wilmington since 6 am.

Going to check on the boat, so will see where the surge is.

Looks like the Carolina Beach camera is out, but the Downtown Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach cameras are up. That water pushing up the river there will go over the dock and into the streets of downtown (on the left) before long.

As I was posting this, the newsroom changed the direction the downtown camera was pointing and tried to zoom in to see what the activity on the bridge is, but there was too much rain on the lens for the level of zoom. lol

Hurricane Iwa caused $382 million in damage in Hawaii in 1982. Not sure if I can find any storms that caused more damage (excluding those EPAC storms that caused damaging rainfall events). Matthew will likely top that.

Pretty sure the maximum sustained winds will be down to tropical storm force by the 11 AM advisory, because Matthew is now just barely a hurricane. Flooding is the main issue now. Hopefully, folks in harm's way will continue to be vigilant.

The inner eyewall band landfell in Charleston. I heard on TWC that Charleston got a record 9 foot surge. I guess Mt Pleasant must have gotten surged so this is not good.

South Carolina governor said watch out for power outage e-mail or link that is virused when you hit "Click On This" for a power outage chart (Those hackers should be hung). Pay attention to url or address.

Kittyhawk, Elizabeth City, and Norfolk/Hampton roads up next. As Matthew hits that colder air he's going to start dumping a ton of rain. A lot of those areas are still saturated from the past 10 days or so. I don't see wind being a HUGE factor, but with the already rising water levels, areas near rivers and such need to take care here. The eastern shift is coming, but STILL later than projected it looks like. Norfolk gets the Western half from South to North. The Elizabeth City and Kitty Hawk areas looks to be getting the full Monty. Maybe 10+ inches of rain in some areas depending on the speed Matthew decides to take through the areas. Again...I'm no met...just observations and and psudo-educated guesses.

The cone changed drastically. Now has Matt becoming post-tropical in 36hrs, and a remnant low in 72hrs.

St. Augustine and the beaches got hit bad and hard from Matthew but thank goodness the hurricane stayed off shore due to the east jog he took Thursday night. That saved Jacksonville and Northeast Florida (and prevented more destruction). My house is ok. There's debri everywhere consisting of mainly of branches and there was a huge oak tree that fell onto the south lane of my neighborhood road. My Grandparent's house on Vilano is also ok so far but the road is flooded from the storm surge and rainfall. We also lost power briefly but we got it back quickly and had many power surges. Now the clean up begins.
