Re: NASA GOES-R and Hurricane Forecasting
Thanks for that link. I'm not overly familier with Reddit (with regards to posting or asking questions), but did take a look at some of the ongoing Q & A regarding the upcoming GOES R Satellite. Seems a good deal of the enhanced technology will allow greater us of Lightning detection as it applies to severe storm forecasting and research. I do believe I saw at least one or two references to Atlantic hurricanes, but was wondering if:
1) this new satellite will provide us a tool for added observation and data input for nearly all of the Atlantic MDR's?
2) Will data derived from the GOES R be ingested for global and/or dynamic modeling used for the Atlantic hurricane season? If so, how quickly and frequent will new data be utilized?

Re: NASA GOES-R and Hurricane Forecasting
There will de a delay in the launch not because of damage caused by Matthew.New date is not know yet.

NOAA: GOES-R Launch date has slipped to November 16th
New tentative launch date will be NET 16 NOV. It could slip further.
https://twitter.com/NOAASatellites/status/788403921727414272
Launch Delayed: Assessments Continue
Oct 18, 2016
NOAA continues to work with its partners -- NASA, United Launch Alliance (ULA) and the U.S. Air Force’s 45th Space Wing -- to assess the infrastructure and facilities necessary for GOES-R launch following Hurricane Matthew. Additional assessments are underway to fully understand the impact the storm had on local facilities. Before Hurricane Matthew, the launch date was set for November 4, 2016.
Once Matthew passed, the launch team began an initial assessment of the launch infrastructure and determined that a move of the launch date is needed based on the storm's impacts. ULA, for planning purposes, has requested a new range date of November 16, pending approval from the 45th Space Wing. This date may be adjusted further.
Throughout the storm, the GOES-R spacecraft remained safe inside Astrotech Space Operations, in Titusville, Fla. NOAA will provide an update as new details become available.

Any idea where this launch will be from.. Florida is my guess.

The comments and opinions I make are borderline crazy and should not be taken too seriously. Please consult NOAA for information.

Yep. The Atlas-V rocket carrying GOES-R will launch from Cape Canaveral AFS.

The GOES-R timeline says once it's launched it goes through testing for 18 months before becoming active. Hope it's not that long.
Yeah, check out/testing until late 2017. Maybe early 2018 now that it's delayed:

Re: NOAA: GOES-R launch rescheduled to Nov 19th

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida -- The launch of a United Launch Alliance Atlas V 541 configuration rocket carrying a Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R Series (GOES-R) from Space Launch Complex 41 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida is scheduled to launch on Saturday, November 19, 2016. The two-hour launch window opens at 4:42 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
GOES-R is the first of four satellites to be launched for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NASA in a new and advanced series of weather spacecraft. Once in geostationary orbit, it will be known as GOES-16.
The spacecraft will provide continuous imagery and atmospheric measurements of Earth’s Western Hemisphere and space weather monitoring. Compared with today’s geostationary satellites, GOES-R will scan the Earth five times faster at four times image resolution and triple the number of channels scientists can tap into to observe global weather and climate.
GOES-R will support short-term forecasts and severe storm watches and warnings, maritime forecasts, seasonal predictions, drought outlooks and space weather predictions. The satellite also will improve hurricane tracking and intensity forecasts, increase thunderstorm and tornado warning lead time, improve aviation flight route planning, and provide data for long-term climate variability studies.
In addition to weather forecasting, GOES-R carries a transponder to detect distress signals from emergency beacons on aircraft, boats/ships and carried by individuals as part of the Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking (SARSAT) system.

I'd say a cautious "slightly possible" to that statement. The plan is to park GOES-R over the U.S. for about a year (through next hurricane season) for testing/calibrating. After that time, it will be decided whether to move it west to replace GOES-W or east to replace GOES-E. There's no guarantee it will cover the Atlantic Basin.
