Just about a perfect February day today - sunny with a high in the low-mid 80s. Got in a great 34 mile bike ride. Only issue was the strong wind, but it was a south wind.

I say we send Heat Miser to Childress (or Lubbock) for some extended bike riding time early next week.
With only some Spandex cycling clothes packed away in his luggage.

Re: Texas Winter 2016-2017
Fifth record high temp for 2017 set today in Austin. What a pile of stinking and rotting garbage this alleged 'winter' has been.
Third one in a row for Austin.
I seriously don't know why I even waste my time of this thread. I'm sure some of you think the same.

Pretty crazy temp map today. You'd have to go back to Feb 1996 to see such extreme temps in winter.

You got me thinking about my favorite weather event in my lifetime. Spent many years a youngster in the northeast and remember many snows. All of my favorites are obviously winter events. I do love all day soaking rain events in any season. Thunderstorms are numerous throughout the year and are awesome to witness, they never get old. Cold air advection days with temps in the 30's with bright sunshine are a rare treat. Arctic high pressure domes with rapidly falling overnight temps with zero wind leading to frigid morning temps are refreshing. All of these are great but the single most favorite weather day in my lifetime is the snow event mentioned above. What a spectacular winter memory. I agree with Texas Snow!! The morning of, my children woke me up and excitedly showed me what had already fallen, only to witness the most beautiful snow I have ever seen throughout the entire day, non-stop. A truly magical event for all ages. The Christmas Eve snow of 2009 might be second, another magical winter moment. Ahhhhh the good ol' days.

Re: Texas Winter 2016-2017
The potential for one last cold shot is starting to appear in the longer range. It looks like the Pacific jet might relax allowing some cold to actually build over Canada towards the end of February. Climo starts working against N. Texas with the quickness but there are plenty of examples of winter striking back during the last week of Feb or 1st of March.

La Niña is over. That is what the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center stated Thursday in their monthly El Niño/La Niña update. It only lasted for a few months but recent observations indicate the Pacific appears to have shifted back to a neutral state; neither La Niña nor El Niño.
In Thursday's report, CPC forecasters indicated that sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific are still slightly below normal, but they have warmed past the threshold for La Nina. In fact, sea surface temperatures in the eastern Pacific off the west coast of South America have become much warmer than normal.
Stay tuned for additional updates on the possible development of El Niño over the next couple of months.
It is dead Jim! BTW, great SkyWarn session today at ACC!!! Mr. Rose is expecting an active severe wx season in Central Texas, so be prepared folks! In other sad news, I have given up on snowy snow and winter.![]()

Bubba, what would cause the jet to retract like that again being so late? Any ideas?

Re: Texas Winter 2016-2017
I think it's time to "call it", as far as winter for TX is concerned. Next week's front may drop temps a little below normal for a couple of days, but it's back to the 80s next weekend. Operational models & ensembles out to 15 days indicate temps in Canada remaining above-normal. There just isn't any cold air to come down here from Canada through the end of February. Yes, it could get cold in March, but I wouldn't bet on the pattern of the last 6 weeks changing in March.

Good news 57. Been loving this winter so far. Only one really cold spell here on the Mississippi Coast. Keep up the good work!......MGC

You could have called it after the early January cold spell, because there has been no "winter" to speak of since then.
For all of you folks who are enjoying this lack of winter ... no griping from you come this spring and summer when the heat and humidity soar and the heat indices are triple digits on a daily basis. Can't have one without the other.

12z GFS has my storm. Unfortunately it's 288+ hours out. Storm could be in Kansas when it occurs if it even exists.

That storm system for next weekend looks potent. Deep negative tilt trough tracking eastward across the state next Sunday. Could be a severe outbreak.

Very amplified MJO in Phase 8 and a stout CCKW tends to favor the potential for severe weather across portions of Texas. It's already on my radar scope, so to speak...
