I'M MADDER THAN HELL...
AFTER we got all this hardware and software for the SBC/Yahoo! DSL, come to find out that "We're sorry, but your location is out of range of our remote"...meaning, we have to send it all back (and we still don't know if we can keep the SBC long-distance and Cingular package stuff)...

What a bunch of Yahoos!
Go give 'em a piece of your mind, Bill!
I'm fortunate that I'm in the service area of our cable company, because this cable modem service is soooo good. I can't complain at all. And it's just a small independent local company.
I never liked Yahoo, MSN, AOL, or any of those becuase it seems that they load a lot of crap on your computer.

Well, we did an online check courtesy of MSN, and we found that all the speedier services (satellite, cable) were too expensive for our budget; besides, according to the lease, we CANNOT have cable/satellite installed under penalty of immediate eviction and loss of deposit.
Guess we're stuck with dial-up, at a maximum speed of 40.0 K per second, and usually much less (28.8K) on a 56K modem set-up.
SBC/Yahoo! s sending us a mailing label to return the soft/hardware, and we still have SBC long-distance and Cingular wireless.

Hang in there, Bill! My 56k modem dial-up
is connecting at 45.3! That does ultimately
suck the big weenerooski, though. They
should have checked your area, first,
I agree! Let them know that you depended
on their knowledge of the area, and, how you
are very upset that they didn't check out the
area, first!

Miss Mary
Bill - sorry this happened to you too. Aggravating is the word (among others I won't type!!! LOL) for it - grrrr. I was w/o a home computer for over a week recently, so I can relate to not being able to access the Internet. At least you can get back online, not the ideal way but it's possible again. You just don't know how much you depend upon a computer until it's gone. I'd want to search for recipes or check to see if that Lands End pea coat was still on sale, just for several examples. And now we read the local newspaper online too. I was really out of the loop there for a bit! Jim would go off to work and I'd remind him of something. His pat response is - email me. Duh! We'd both shake our heads......whatever did we all do w/o the Internet/computers/email? It's a blur, honestly.....well I know I had a much cleaner house, ironing was caught up (hard to iron and use a mouse), yard was weeded, etc. LOL

Mary, what's distressing is that some, if not (soon) most of Debi's SEMO professors have the students take their tests online...and in one case two days ago, Debi had to download a zip-file for one of her classes, which took FOURTEEN HOURS at 28.8K.
We need speed...just don't know how to get it.

Only people who can afford/have cable or satellite service.
According to my tardy research, the closest remote terminal for SBC/Yahoo! DSL is in Doniphan, MO...about 180 miles and five counties away from this little neck of the Bootheel.
They (SBC) were "in progress" of having remotes all over the place, but the "dot.com crunch" hit all of the companies hard, and they ARE still planning to add Sikeston to their service area...WHEN is the question.

Sorry to say but thats only 4k a sec
SOrry to hear that about your DSL. I run on cable and get between 500 and 700K a sec about a Meg every 2 secs. Its a huge difference if you ever get to the point where you can afford it.
Good Luck
