If it does make landfall by 7, maybe it'll slow down soon enough that it'll never be upgraded.

At this point, what category they call it won't make things any safer or less safe for the people--they are either going to evacuate or stick it out, and they've made their choice by now. So the final ruling can be made later, when all the data has been gathered and they can do the statistics.

Harvey is slowing down his forward speed noticeably the past hour or so on radar.

Yea definitely not a cat 4. I'd bank on a strong cat 3 landfall at this rate. Not much water left.

There were tons of those in Hancock Co. Mississippi with Katrina. Driving around after the storm and seeing trees twisted off 15-20' up was an indicator.

I wonder what recon would find if they sampled the SW eyewall again. That was where the most intense winds in Celia were. Also, during Andrew, I'm pretty sure convective cells peaked in the southwest eyewall, which caused the extreme damage in Naranja Lakes.

Hurricane Harvey looks incredible on radar and satellite at 125MPH this evening. 47 years since the last major hurricane CAT 3 Celia visited the Coastal Bend and this evening that streak will come to an end. In addition, Harvey 2017 will join the ranks of Beulah 67, Carla 61, Celia 70, and Alicia 83 as CAT 3 major hurricanes to visit the TX Coast since the 60s.

My fear is the U-Turn starts or has started while still offshore, keeping it offshore as it sweeps up the coastline toward Galveston/Houston. I am about 25 miles north of Houston and that would send very strong winds up this way also as well as the rain.

Snippet from The Houston NWS afternoon discussion:

The potential for copious amounts of rainfall exists with Harvey
over the next five days with the storm total potential of 15 to 35
inches and isolated maximum amounts of 40 inches through next
Wednesday. Rainfall of this magnitude will cause catastrophic and
life-threatening flooding!

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Lightning in the eyewall indicates a strong and strengthening storm. Harvey taking advantage of every last second over water https://weather.us/lightning/969-w-279- ... 2210z.html
