As bad as the damage looks in Rockport, I admit I was expecting far worse based on those videos from last night.

Good example of a community following building codes, IMO.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Hopefully the 8 fatalities was false information, shared too early.
They had tweeted this and it looks like it was deleted.

It appears storm surge wasn't as big as predicted didn't reach 13feet. The wind was very strong, but well built homes will survive that unless the wind is cat 5.
My hypothesis is the storm surge under produced because the storm didn't churn the ocean as a strong hurricane for a long time. Katrina took much longer to reach ashore and was a strong hurricane much longer.

I'm watching this now too, and it struck me as being the one of the saddest news broadcasts ever, and I'm in Eastern NC, where we've had plenty of hurricane coverage. I think there are just plain old worn out, though.
They definitely have some bad news to deliver, the male anchor almost did it a few minutes ago, but the female anchor stopped him wanting additional confirmation.

Another thing to keep in mind. Max winds topped at 130 mph... it didn't reach the hurricane Charley near cat 5 wind. So the odds are you will not see homes lost from the foundation.

That Corpus Christi wind was at 6:24 pm, seems stronger winds should have hit later.

Invest 91L definitely a possible U.S. mainland problem but more than 10 days down the road. Would be "Harvey" ... westward track concern.

The EURO forecasted what would become Harvey would become a threat for the US.

Harvey is likely not a hurricane anymore as I cannot seem to find winds stronger than strong TS-force. Nonetheless, the BIGGEST concern now is the flooding event that is quickly unfolding for Texas.

Was this the invest that it and the GFS to some extent I believe originally have coming towards the SE U.S. and Florida?

If I remember correctly Hurricane Charley made landfall with winds of 145 verses Harvey with 130.

New GFS is in. Brings it W into Mexico after stalling in SE TX. Would be best case scenario IMO because of no restrengthening over the GOM. Still devastating flooding though... https://weather.us/model-charts/standar ... 0400z.html

In the wee hours of the night, I recall seeing a photo of large fire involving structures on twitter, and reading a single post on the stream of "fireworks" as source. But who knows.

He also stated it was one of the most intense hurricanes he had ever been in in this video-

I've also heard there have been a few deaths.

It just amazes me how some houses seem to survive without even windows or shingles missing, yet there's total destruction of the house next door.
When I lost my home in Rita the first three of us were wiped out while the neighbor next to me (in a mobile home at that) didn't even so much as have his trashcan knocked over. We've assumed it was straight line winds or tornadoes.

A bit of good news regarding communications in the region. According to ABC 13 Houston Comcast is opening their Wi-Fi hotspots regardless of subscriber status during Harvey.

I don't think we've seen the full picture yet. Still haven't seen much out of Port Aransas and Aransas Pass which was in the eyewall for hours.
