I am in Beaumont and was woken up about 5:45 by another flash flood warning and can't get back to sleep.

It is still really dark, so I can't see how bad it is here yet. But from the news, much of I-10 seems to be closed in Beaumont and many surface roads are underwater. Also, lots of power outages in the area. I still have power so far, luckily.

Worried because my mother-in-law is supposed to have dialysis this morning and I don't want any of us driving through this water.

I realize Houston is more important, with many more people, but we are getting hammered in The Golden Triangle area. Roads closed. Schools closed. Most businesses closed. Heavy rain for hours on top of all of the other disastrous rains the past day or so. A lot of flooding and it's still coming down.

And no electricity! Ugh

I know I'm a newbie here and don't live in your area but I have friends who work at Motiva in Port Arthur and what used to be Lanxess in Orange. If you need something let me know. A few are posting on another forum (non-weather related) that they want to help.

That said, I'll be heading to New Orleans today for a conference and have been monitoring the situation there from reports on this site. I'm not 100% confident in local leaders down that way to call of an evacuation in a timely manner. As important as this conference is to my business, I'm not opposed to heading home without attending. I was supposed to fly down, but my flight into IAH has been cancelled. I'll be driving, laying up short in Mississippi making my final decision to head in for one day on Wednesday morning. I have zero desire to be stuck in a bowl with malfunctioning pumps, biblical rain and only a few opportunities for egress.

The folks here seem to have been 12-18 hrs ahead of "official" forecasts. What I are the thoughts on effects of this thing in NOLA?

In Houston they are talking Thursday before they can restore power ATM.
That is well within generator range .

As long as roads remain impassable due to flooding, there is still no timeline for power restoration, CenterPoint said.
"Please be prepared for extended power outages," the utility said on its Twitter feed.
TNMP, which serves customers in southern Harris County, estimated that power won't be restored until 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Also, a lot of roads that are underwater are not typical places that flood. And many businesses (non-essential...ie restaurants, retail, offices) are threatening to fire people who don't show up to work.

I have not heard any reports about businesses threatening to fire people. Hopefully this is not true.

underground power lines do well in high wind events..restoration doesnt happen when they are underwater

Mine did. They did end up canceling after people were supposed to be there yesterday. Today I am off. We will see what happens tomorrow. There are reports of people on local news station Facebook pages told to show up or they were fired. Cattle Company (restaurant) being one of them.

looks like there were Andrew-style mesovortices in the eye when it came ashore, so despite the debate about a dozen or so pages pages back Jeff probably did see 130+MPH sustained winds.

The flooding is incredible---anything I can do to help I will.

I believe the southern edge of the eye is just now emerging back into the gulf with the bulk of the eye still over low lying coastal land and marshes.

WV satellite loop shows dryer moving into Houston but radar shows a different story, may not be the torrential rains from high reaching thunderstorm clouds it got Friday night but shallow tropical rains can still dump a copious amount of rains.
GFS & NAM this morning show a not so good looking forecast for SE TX the next couple of days.

Hi Casper, IMO, If I were you, I would watch this thing very closely before deciding to go into NOLA. Not sure where your conference is in the city, which could make a difference in terms of any potential flooding, BUT, if the rain rates are high, even when ALL the pumps are online it can get ahead of the pumps and street flooding ensues. You're right, NOLA is a below sea level bowl and we have had a very VERY wet spring and summer in this region so the ground is highly saturated. If we get caught under a feeder band it is game on for flooding, and it happens very fast. Again, caution and good luck to you. I would suggest that you listen to a NOLA news station in the upcoming days for updates, concerns and up to the minute news. wwl.com is a good one to start with. Texas, we all love you. PLEASE bring attention to ANY organization that is doing this. In our 2015 flood, many of those who died, died on trying to get to work in treacherous conditions.

Would you drive into New Orleans on Wed, Aug 30th for a couple hrs given the part I circled in red? I will be taking I-10 to 90, destination is Morial convention center. As it is now, I will be driving down, staying In MS, making a final decision on Wednesday morning.
