Tornado watch will be allowed to expire but

Mesoscale Discussion 1595
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1132 PM CDT Mon Aug 28 2017

Areas affected...Far Southeast TX...Coastal LA

Concerning...Tornado Watch 474...

Valid 290432Z - 290630Z

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 474 continues.

SUMMARY...Tornado Watch 474 will be allowed to expire at 05Z and a
replacement Watch is not anticipated.

DISCUSSION...Banded structure noted over the past several hours has
waned with a much more cellular structure to much of the convection
associated with Tropical Storm Harvey. The center of Harvey appears
to have shifted slightly north-northeastward. Some strengthening may
also be occurring. The buoy to the southwest of the center (KBQX)
recently reported a gust to 49 kt.
This modest increase in winds is
likely contributing to increased WAA and the cooling of cloud tops
within the deformation band over southeast TX and within the
cellular convection off the LA coast. Some small northward movement
of the front off the coast has also been noted. However, the front
currently remains offshore and consensus amongst the guidance is for
the front to remain offshore until the system begins moving
northeastward a bit quicker late Tuesday morning.

It is raining hard now and from the looks of the radar, it looks like it continues all night. But the forecast keeps switching from 2-3 inches to 5-8 inches and significant flooding. I think no one really knows what is going on.

I wouldn't worry about work. More important you stay safe

I know, and I would never dream of attempting to get there if the streets flood again. It is just the uncertainty that is making me nervous.

don't worry about helping someone else make money at a time like this (unless of course, you won your own business). You and your family is all that matters. The business owner who you work for can go without for a few days if needed

Unless of course, you are directly helping others deal with the flood event. Then that is a bit different

In Houston, right now a quarter to half inch per hour. To the south, up to 2-2.5 inches per hour

Would anyone know some terms or references I could look at to better understand what is going on with how these precipitation bands are forming? In particular I'm interested in how the bands set up and then create lines of bands that are perpendicular to them which then converge with other bands and grow. It seems like an almost mathematically ideal process is going on there but I am little more than an interested hobbyist with a math background and have no idea where to begin for serious reading.

I would not be using radar at the moment

Look at GOES-16 IR. Center is barely moving

Also FWIW, 04Z HRRR moves the center from LA coastline to back offshore. Hope that is a fluke. Would start making rainfall totals in SW Louisiana a problem

Thanks so much for the update. With this tragedy continuing in Houston please relay to the folks who took it on the chin first that they are not forgotten and there are still prayers and help coming their way. It takes a long time to heal and recovery can be very slow, but it happens and generosity will be shown by fellow Americans and beyond. I've been there, its tough, my heart aches for all affected. Resources for comfort and recovery WILL be there and plentiful. We gotcha Texas. Godspeed.

A new heavy band of rain is about to hit Houston. Areas between it and Galveston are getting dumped with rain! I'm dreading the news I might hear when I wake up tomorrow morning...

aperson,

There are a lot of processes going on that will be researched and written about in the future. From dry air interaction to a frontal focusing mechanism. The low level center just offshore to deep tropical surge to the east cut off by the dry air. There is a lot of weather from Texas eastward and over to the Carolinas. http://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/national_f ... atfcst.php

What I would say is I'm now in some deep tropical heavy air here to the east. So there are still tropical processes going on regardless of whatever Harvey might be.

Damn. Moisture streaming up to MS/AL/NW FL. Most of that probably dissipates. Be wary of bands out the ssw. Teritary to Houston and all of SE TX obviously but dangers lurk.

That's conflicting - Head of the Red Cross was on TV today saying they need a LOT - mostly volunteers and monetary donations.

I'm watching abc13.com There are people being rescued at this time. There is a man driving a front end loaded up and down a main road..at every intersection there are people standing waiting to be rescued. Crying for help and he can only take a few at a time. They are scared and trying to climb on the sides of the front end loader he said earlier. He said they need more HELP. This is on ONE road ..imagine how many people need to be rescued. It's raining, there are children shivering...everybody is soaking wet and they are having to wait to be taken to a walmart, where they are boarded on another vehicle and taken to a shelter, shelters which are running out of blankets, food...etc. Its bad, trust me...its bad.

Yet the Houston Fire Department has advised they do not need or want any more volunteer help. It's just like Katrina and with the denial of what is being shown right on live TV, it's making me sick.

I swear I thought we were going to get a bit of a break. Radar showed the heavier rain moving a bit eastward. And then nooooo....it has to fill in and expand and now we've got heavier rain just about to hit us again (just nw of downtown Houston). This storm just won't quit us.
