We only had 1.8 inches of rain at my house overnight last night. We're a bit north and west of downtown Houston. But now the rain has picked up and it's raining much harder. It almost looks like Harvey has decided to come back to visit Houston again. I simply can't believe this.

Addicks seems to be slowing down, up to 108.42 now. I'm guessing the uncontrolled overflow and breaks in the rain is allowing things to slow down there.

tragic to read this news of a police officer drowning. My thoughts & prayers & gratitude are with all first responders, and all the volunteers risking their lives for others:

It's really bad guys/girls. Getting rough in some areas of the Golden Triangle.

Winnie is inundated with water. Many homes have water as well as the Hamshire-Fannett community and the North End of Beaumont including Pinewood/Bevil Oaks, who were ordered to leave yesterday. It's not good.

A Houston police office has drowned in his patrol car trying to get to work. No words.

Is anyone estimating when that rain core will slide east and stop raining? By tonight?

Kingwood is now flooding. It had been relatively dry last evening. (Relatives there)

Been listening to the mayor of Houston about not issuing evacuation orders. I understand evacuating over 6 million people is not reasonable but they new the torrential rains were coming. They knew from Allison what area's would probably flood and could have started with those area's. He stated a few days ago that a voluntary evacuation should have been sufficient and people would leave on their own. Bottom line I don't think the city government or the citizens took it serious enough.

I've been watching this on radar. I don't understand. I thought Harvey was supposed to be moving NE away from Houston. It looks from the radar like he's moving more northward, which is why the bands are coming back into the west of Houston again. Is he following the forecast track?

I think so. The models did take him along the upper Texas coast. SW La always a possibility. He moved further off the coast than expected, but he may now swing back more strongly.

Harvey. Great big sub-tropical look. Hard to imagine there won't be strong trop force winds to the east of where that large center makes landfall from this ex-major.

I see lots of awesome pictures of people's dogs being rescued, but it doesn't seem like cats are getting any love :(

It wouldn't have been millions, just those thousands sitting in traditional low lying, flooding areas. That's all I will say. Look up the Memorial Day and tax day floods.

I have to confess I thought the same thing. The dog pictures have totally dominated. Maybe wet cats look too mad / unhappy, not as photogenic. Or perhaps they're all in crates as you can't really easily leash a cat and they might be too upset to hold???!!!

Listening to the police scanner. Reports of armed men trying to break into homes in Spring. Wow, my family lives there.

I'm not sure Jeff Lindner has had any sleep since this began... one of the unsung heroes keeping folks informed...

With respect to evacuations...obviously evacuating 6 million safely from localized unpredictable flash flooding isn't reasonable, necessary or possible. I Don't blame the mayor or anybody for that at all. I wish the city will learn some lessons from this, that they didn't from tax day or Allison. They need to be more proactive and targeted in reaching out to people in known flood zones and possibly announce voluntary evacuations. In this day and age, with technology and whatnot, seems reasonable warnings and notifications could be pushed out in a targeted fashion to the people that need to move. The uneducated public isn't going to study a flood map. But some will leave if you say "the rain predicted could flood zones 1-2, and people are educated of their zones." This is high level stuff and would take large investments in marketing campAigns, signage, etc. Bottom line is we have to do this better. This one storm will redraw the flood maps for Houston and they need to be ready to move with that info.

FWIW, in the old days, (I joke cuz I'm in my 30s) in the country, folks knew if they were unsafe flood prone areas. We had more floods than I can count growing up, be it storm surge or river. But it was rare people got caught off guard and needed "rescueing". I realize flash floods in an urban environment are tricky and the city life can lull one into a false sense of safety from Mother Nature. I guess my point is that I hope people will take note and start paying attention to their locations and the weather and plan differently.
