Anyone living in flooding, or hurricane prone areas, and rescuers need to get the Zello app. It is being used for those needing rescues to be sent to rescuers. It is a walker talkie type app. I just heard some chilling messages and citizen responders getting people there to rescue them.

What a life saver!

It sounds like this is for very limited service. Channel 2 just reported that Southwest Airlines won't have any flights until Saturday at noon.

I could be dead wrong, but if those black spots are centers, might that one have just rotated over or the center spawned them? They appear on 18:45 frame. It looks like it's lifting out North - just not that fast.

There are now citizens with vehicles in Port Arthur at the MaxBowl where they have been gathering the evacuees to take people to other shelters or loved ones local areas.

ABC 12 just showed about 6 helicopters over an area of Port Arthur.

Also Waco Navy is working to try to get in deeper in Port Arthur.

A Dallas man with a truckload just pulled up to MaxBowl bringing water, diapers, towels, food for the evacuees there. Says he is with the Cajun Navy.
More people are pulling in with supplies.

Another man that lost his house was also there to help. Said he can't dwell on it and needs to help those he can.

Either that or the gauge is having issues. Hard to know for sure but hopefully it has stabilized and isn’t a gauge issue.

So far I have not seen anything about an error. When the other dam's sensor went out the readings stopped.

It is the sensors that have not even been discussed here that may be crucial. These (IF present) monitor the stability of the main spillway gates.

Previously I'd posted about the auxiliary spillway (emergency spillway) overtopping, where erosion over a long period of drainage, if necessary, could be an issue. But apparently there IS another issue: The main spillway is basically a big underground concrete pipe, and has suffered soil erosion around it. What were essentially patch job repairs were done in 2009. New gates to replace the old gates are under construction, but not yet completed.

See these links:

https://youtu.be/iwTjhjRPCeM

https://youtu.be/yezfTeE7r_o (esp. 10:52 for a drawing of the structure -- the foundation is fine sand)

Depending on how much erosion has occurred, failure at the main gates is a possibility. Hopefully it is a very low possibility. In an extreme case, the head (water pressure) at the gates could literally eject the gate from the dam.

The Corps of Engineers considers these "high risk dams", but apparently more because of how critical they are, than an actual risk of failure.
