Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
Just a quick question really. I have friends that have evacuated from Key West 3 cars, kids, pets, chickens (I know) It's the right call but they've basically been driving north without much of a plan where to head towards. So far they've made it as far as Ocala and are now wondering how far is far enough? Where would you head to in this situation?

Scotland the only place where you can get a suntan and trench foot on the same day

Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
We will get the first storm surge forecast when watches go up. That'll probably kick people into gear in storm surge prone areas.

With pets and chickens it may be hard for them to find a suitable accommodation just anywhere, so I wonder if they should just find a place and stick with it? Ocala could definitely see some strong winds and heavy rain, and maybe some uncomfortable days depending on power outages, but it's night-and-day compared to Key West. Just my non-Florida-resident opinion...

Hi flamingosun, I see you are in Merritt Island. I am in Titusville, just wondering if you are staying on the island for Irma, or heading inland? We are staying put! Be safe!

I would expect significant storm surge funneling into Biscayne Bay if Irma hits South Dade on a NNW track. Brickell, Miami River, Venetian Islands, and Bayside Miami Beach should EVACUATE if ordered. I think all of the Venetian Islands especially may be flooded over.

Tallahassee, Pensacola
Anywhere west. We keep talking about Atlanta, anywhere in SC, NC, but apparently THEY are going to get some of this thing, too. If it were my decision, I'd go out I-10

That' why anyone wanting to get out should start now. The further south you are, the harder it is going to be to get far enough north.

Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
We have 2 double-edged swords:
If Irma stays offshore, the wind velocity will be less over the peninsula, but Irma will stay stronger longer and have more strength at landfall in Georgia/South Carolina.
If Irma's forward speed increases and she stays offshore, winds will be even weaker over the peninsula, but the strong side (NE quadrant) will be much stronger at impact in GA/SC.

Governor created a mess by calling emergencies in counties everywhere and not putting a rationing system in place.
People in Miami cannot evacuate now..there isn't enough gas.

With that crew a campground type situation might work well. A speedway somewhere (talledaga?) was opening up for evacuees.

With how the NHC track is now personally I think Ocala is a good stopping point. And maybe more pet friendly there than most major cities. It's a pretty rural area, and would probably be more accommodating as far as the pet thing goes. Just my opinion though.

Former resident/homeowner from Pensacola and suggest that area as well. West of Tallahassee, you will find more farming country and can possibly find someone to help out with the chickens in particular.

Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
This showed up in my Facebook feed and wanted to share for those who may have horses in need of safe shelter during the storm (Site Mod's, I hope I am not breaking any rules in posting/sharing this, feel free to delete if it is outside proper guidelines, but this is my first post even though have been a member for a long time, just trying to help). This was posted on Facebook yesterday by Heartland Rescue Ranch, original post by Trylon International Equestrian Center. Sadly, Tryon does charge a fee for lodging (wish they had waived that for this storm), but still thought it was share worthy.:

I wouldn't say you're out of the woods in Ocala, especially with some of the tree coverage you get in N FL, but probably safer than being on the Keys.

Forecast calls for great weather into the middle of next week for the north central gulf coast Pensacola, Mobile, Gulfport and New Orleans. If folks leaving are looking for a place nearby that SHOULD be out of harms way.
Please don't wait on the Government to tell what to do. Be a man or woman and keep your family safe. You should be prepared if you live in south Florida.

Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
For those on the West coast in Pinellas County, should evacuation orders be issued, there is a very informative surge visualizer tool you can reference that is property-specific, should you want to see how your residence or business would fare under a surge threat.
http://egis.pinellascounty.org/apps/stormsurgeprotector/index.html
http://www.tbo.com/pinellas-county/pinellas-storm-surge-app-makes-theoretical-damage-personal-20150531/
The Storm Surge Protector application, on the county’s website at http://www.pinellascounty.org/emergency, is based on property records and on storm and flood models from the National Hurricane Center, she said.
The program can determine what kind of structure is at each address, show it on a map and display a picture of it. It shows the evacuation zone, from “A” through “E,” which indicates when people need to leave the area. “A” is the most vulnerable and the area that will be ordered to evacuate first; “E” is the least vulnerable, except for nonevacuation zones.
An “A” level evacuation might leave property in that zone under 2 feet of water while “E” remains dry. But an “E” level evacuation not only will flood that zone, but also could leave the “A” zones under 9 feet of water or more.

Sorry, I'm just a girl! I'm not sure I'm explaining it clearly enough, but anyway, knowing those braces are there makes me feel better about my gable roof (as growing up in FL, I KNOW gable roofs are not the safest ones you can have), but this can reinforce them somewhat.
That's a really good idea. I think I'm going to head to home depot and get some 2x4's.
Here's a great guide on gable end bracing: http://www.floridadisaster.org/hrg/cont ... racing.asp
