I think my brother is fascinated with the first big test of my Dads over engineered roof he installed in Margate FL. If this track comes in a bit West of forecast, he will get his wish.

NOAA just posted their storm surge estimate for south Florida. Below is a link to a Google + GIS map that displays that data.

When the map opens it is centered at Homestead Air Reserve Base south of Miami. The light brown color indicates a potential storm surge depth of 6 to 9 feet of water on the runways.

To know what the other colors mean you need to look at the map legend for this overlay layer. Click “Map Tips” in the upper left corner and then click the “Legend” button.

How far from the turnpike do you live? Are you relatively close to State Rd 7?

Just heard my cousins in Palm Beach County aren't evacuating. So frustrating. Any idea what they can expect?

It doesn't seem like that much. S FL can handle surge quite well from what I have read online at other places, and on this forum.

nws may be worried that all this talk of a shift is leading s FL to underestimate Irma. Expect a big ramp up in language.

With Irma maintaining strength for so long and building up surge, how will this affect surge in the Bahamas and South Florida compared to if it strengthened at the last minute?

Apologies for the 101 level question:

Would more land interaction (over Cuba, for example) slow the forward speed of Irma, and if this were to happen, would that be enough of a change in forward speed to affect the track of the storm? Or would the only effect of more land interaction be the lessening of intensity of the storm?

Just East for Dad! Pays 3 times what I do for homeowners insurance as a result.
