How much of the Florida citrus crop is expected to be affected or destroyed?

Has there ever been a season with more than one storm name retired?

We also have tons of food and water if we stay, a generator and gas to run it for probably 10 days, etc.
That little gap between our coast and the center of the track is probably giving me more hope than I should have.
Just don't know what to do.
We're close to you on Amelia Island and had a mandatory evacuation for Matthew and went inland. i'm guessing that we'll see that this time as well. We had no damage from Matthew are are hoping that this one stays far enough to the east to follow suit.

Not sure if this has been posted already, but look at the percentages for potential power outages - pretty much all of FL except for the panhandle could see significant power disruptions.

Gov. Scott on CNN completly avoids the contra flow question for North only traffic flow on I95, Turnpike, I75, etc. At the same time, he is actively encouraging both coasts to evacuate.
These roads are parking lots for miles, and miles, wasting gas while getting nowhere quick.
What is he waiting for?

Yes. Last happened in 2010 [oops, no also in 2016. The link below is only through 2015, sorry]
https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/retired.asp
I beieve this would be the first season since 2005 with two CONSECUTIVE names for retirement (Harvey & Irma)

Question, and I'm sure it's been asked, but I haven't had the chance to go back through all the pages.
Could Irma create it's own steering environment, bypass the trough and is there any way of knowing whether that environment has been created?
Thanks,
Mike

How far from the turnpike do you live? Are you relatively close to State Rd 7?
Just East for Dad! Pays 3 times what I do for homeowners insurance as a result.
Maybe off topic a little, but you saying you were in Margate made me think of this:
In the last '60's, my husband was a carpenter working on homes in Margate, a lot of those homes were built with CONCRETE ROOFS!!!
What did your dad do to "over-engineer" his roof??

Would more land interaction (over Cuba, for example) slow the forward speed of Irma, and if this were to happen, would that be enough of a change in forward speed to affect the track of the storm? Or would the only effect of more land interaction be the lessening of intensity of the storm?
Could potentially weaken it, but not slow it's forward speed.
Yes, this.
Forward speed is determined more by the fronts, upper-air steering currents, Highs and Lows in the atmosphere.

Palm Beach County is large. Impact to coastal area (east of 95) will be different from areas further west... Also depends on type of house, etc. Need more detail for folks to be able this type of question.
Something that is going to be interesting to watch if it moves up through Dade/Broward/PB Counties is what is going to happen with Lake Okeechobee. It can have it's own storm surge, which has been a problem in the past
Heard yesterday that they are pumping lots of water out of the lake for that purpose. What year was it a hurricane went to the lake and dumped so much rain it over-flowed its banks and killed a lot of people in Belle Glade or somewhere near the lake?

Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
Just talked to my husband, who is driving back from a meeting in Pensacola. Lots of power company and AT&T trucks on I-10 heading eastward, I'm guessing to a staging area somewhere near Tallahassee.
Irma is going to suck hard for a lot of people, but the recovery plan is being implemented already.
For those looking for accommodation, try the looking for vacation condo rentals from Panama City Beach to Destin/Ft. Walton Beach- Pensacola Orange Beach/Gulf Shores. Sometimes owners make allowances for evacuation specials, allowing pets, etc. so a call to talk to the management company as well as internet booking might be good. Air BnB/VRBO may be another good option- lots of condos list through there.

Re: ATL: IRMA - Hurricane - Discussion
Let's try to keep the questions focused on Irma, please. Other questions can go in other threads or wait. This thread is getting cluttered with un-important chatter.

That close to the beach, not only wind but also storm surge or flooding is a consideration for you.
Do you normally flood in a bad storm or heavy rain? This will be lots of off-shore water coming in.
