Do we have a good radar loop view of this storm at the moment?

The beautiful rain forest island of the lesser Antilles has a trochoid wobbling intensifying category 5 hurricane about to go right over it...This is historic and the affects will be devastating...

Well, the capital is to the south-west, and most cities seem to be around the southern half of the island.

This would be the second Cat. 5 landfall of the year, too. Only other time this happened in the Atlantic was 2007 iirc (Dean/Felix).

EDIT: Whoops, ninja'd.

It would be the 8th actually because Irma had SIX category 5 landfalls: Barbuda, Saint Martin, Ginger Island, Tortola, Little Inagua & Cuba. And Maria is making the season count rise to 7. It could possibly hit 8 or 9 if it hits the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico as a Category 5.

However it IS the second Cat 5 HURRICANE of the 2017 season to make any amount of landfalls at Category 5 intensity (tying the season with 2007).

I want to say the Cat 5 SFMR readings were found in Jose before the islands? I can't remember. Second or third, yes.

I remember going to San Juan on business 6 months after Hurricane Georges. It was a nightmare. I fear for those fine people there. Pray for them.

Obviously the population of the islands is the major concern, but the ecosystem damage occurring right now is also going to be horribly depressing. I feel the islands hit the hardest by Irma and Maria won't be back to full normal from an ecological perspective in my lifetime.

Given that Dominica is fairly large and populated, I really hope there are a lot of well constructed shelters all around the islands. This will be unlike anything they've ever dealt with.

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Does anyone know how much of Dominica was evacuated? I know Barbuda was almost 100 % evacuated before Irma, but it seems like the people of Dominica did not get as much warning :(

SECONDED! An INTERIOR, WINDOWLESS, ABOVE GROUND room is the best. Get a MATTRESS and use it to cover yourself. Keep a WX RADIO and BOTTLED WATER nearby. Everything else can WAIT!

. Wow! It looks to get hit as bad as Barbuda and has 72,000 Residents instead of 1600 . I fear many casualties.

Hopefully next season we'll be able to rely on a little more than thoughts and prayers. I know Harvey was an oft-discussed scenario, but Houston dragged its feet on the flooding problem, and batted around a lot of ideas without paying for any of them. I'm sick and tired of having to rely on major storms to get officials to actually even *attempt* to address the neglect and vulnerability that plagues our cities.

...Sorry if that is too political, but I literally was reading about how my hometown suffered the most losses and deaths in the U.S. due to flooding a month before Harvey hit, and the year before that I read about the glaring vulnerability of it to a major storm, and a year before that the Weather Channel straight up rated it as the city most endangered by hurricanes. I'm kind of mad about how we literally see risks coming from decades away, and then say it's "too expensive" to do anything about them...until the city gets destroyed and makes the expense of the plans look like pennies.

moving north of west, less of a northerly component/influence for the short term, we shall see if this may dramatically affect the actual track..... southern part of Dominica is getting battered!

Big difference in population of Barbuda vs. Dominica, this could be really bad folks and the worst will be over the most populated region to.
