Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
why are so many of these cheap flat roofs in Puerto rico. Those went away in the late 50's for pitched systems.
There is going to be alot of missing roofs.

Incomes in Puerto Rico are much lower than on the US mainland for the most part.

You are correct. But that is hands down the worst roof you can have for this

if you are 100 miles either side of an nhc 5 day track you better watch out, yes the cone is 5 years of stats but the last couple of years they are sharpshooters even at 5 daysRL3AO wrote:NHC archive so far. Excellent track. By Monday morning, the forecast called for a cat 4 landfall in Puerto Rico.

Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
Starting to be just a bit concerned. Yesterday I told the wife that virtually all the models had Maria out to sea. Got up this morning and everything has changed. I know the Navgem is to be used for entertainment purposes only. The 00z Euro is another story, and now the GFS is also near NC. Both the Euro and the GFS were both safely out to sea yesterday. I don’t know what to think now.

ABC News was reporting 100% power outage in PR. Did the power plants get knocked offline?

And it begins...Im so sorry. Hopefully your friend's person affected will have access to some form of communications framework soon to let them know they are ok. I think the "Check-in" feature of facebook is one of its most important.

They have major power issues without a storm, rolling blackouts are common 6 months of the year. The grid has not been updated since the 70's. I saw an expert on Bay news 9 said they did not even make parts for it anymore and that the power companies were reduced to making local counterfeits.
It will take months to probably get it back online

@ESPNMcGee -- Just received email from friend in San Juan, Puerto Rico. "Roads underwater and no roofs on anything in every direction as far as I can see"

I think we're gonna see models go Irma 2.0 and just shift west until landfall on CONUS is inevitable.

There are ALOT of houses like that. My dad's is that way, it is the way the houses were built for many years. My grandfather built the house my dad is in 60 years ago. At least 2 or 3 times a year my dad has to go up and put more tar down because the sun melts it. The house is solid, it has poured concrete walls, but the roofs are another story.

Looks like some cooler cloud tops and the larger eye trying to clear out. Thankfully, there's no more islands in its path.

Most likely. They reported millions without power from Irma, a storm which didn't even directly hit PR. So this is not too surprising. Especially with the track Maria took going right across the island diagonally, leaving none of it untouched.

I spent time in PR near Dorado and Vega Alta. Some homes had a flat reinforced concrete roof with tar paper and gravel on top. I was told people used concrete bcause of hurricanes.

Hopefully the opportunity is used to completely rebuild the power infrastructure in Puerto Rico from the ground up.

Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
Recon indicates Maria is down to a Cat 2 now. Maybe 90-95 kts. Pressure up to 960mb. Mountains tend to have a big impact on a hurricane.
