Its not happening from a local government standpoint. There is no money. It will have to come from washington DC, which i dont doubt. Puerto Rico needs to be a state already maybe this will be the event that spurs them to finally do it.

Colors of lost purpose on the canvas of irrelevance

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Yeah, they shredded her core, given the forecasted shear ahead of her, she'll struggle to get above cat 3.

That's unlikely, PR's power utility AAEE filed for bankrupcy earlier this year.

However, we can't reliably predict shear right now, and she might just re-organize and re-intensify anyway.

NHC has her forecast to go back up to a 4.

Thought I saw they had her weakening as she moved north?

Looks like cloud tops are cooling again now that Maria is back over water. See if she'll restrengthen or not.

She probably will, unless she dives west into Hispanola.

PR is broke. Their only saving grace is that the U.S. government bails them out and pays for all the storm-related damage.

If that includes infrastructure so next time, there won't be such wide-spread outages, all the better.

I don't know how people are going to pay to have their houses (or roofs) rebuilt. I always thought a concrete house, with a concrete roof would be a better structure to ride out a TC, but not if the roof is not reinforced. That's the weak point for the storm to find a way in, or collapse entirely, and trap the people inside.

They do, but after a brief re-strengthening

This is an opportunity for the philanthropists Gates, Buffett, Zuckerburg, Keck Foundation, etc. to make a significant infrastructure investment in a relatively poor and now devastated region relatively close to home. Its also an opportunity for NGOs and not-for-profits to create and present to the philanthropists innovative road-maps for dealing with the suffering in Puerto Rico on a long term scale. The previously mentioned philanthropists are not interested in simply meeting budget shortfalls but rather funding outside-of-the-box (high risk and high reward) projects that provide the opportunity for eventual self-sufficiency. From the horrific destruction of Puerto Rico from this disaster we must take advantage of the opportunities Maria has given us to transform Puerto Rico for the better. Not to ensure that the island is a US client but to give a future that it will enable it to chart it own course with confidence.

True, but they also had predicted that the current intensity would be 120 kts, which is way too high.

The power grid there is poor on a sunny day, this will be an opportunity to build it better

Hopefully, they will be able to strap down their roofs if they have to be replaced, as Florida requires now. They can be retrofitted.

San Juan mayor said it will be 4-6 months for power to return there. I can't imagine.

Orographic lifting and lee side subsidence is taking its toll on Maria's circulation. Going to need to move away from the island if it is to strengthen.
