Here's another picture of Roseau from ground level. As you can see, the structures that look decent from the air are mostly gutted inside. Broken windows, which led to broken exterior walls around the windows but the main concrete structure and metal roofing held. Still the interior of the structure is dsstroyed.

This is going to miss the east coast of the US. It can't miss the US because it already hit it.

Here comes the short wave that is rotating southward west of Jose, this is the main player that is eroding the ridging north and west of Maria which will make it start a more NNW heading later tonight. See how mid level heights are starting to fall across the gulf coast & FL.

I posted this in the models thread as well:

As someone who lives in VA, I wish everyone would kindly stop saying that this thing is gone or that it's clear-cut that it's supposed to recurve. I've noticed a pattern of people freaking out over landfall in a certain location for it to only go elsewhere (I.E. Irma with Miami vs. SW Florida), but also of people disregarding the potential for landfall due to model consensus just for it to strike out of nowhere. As much as I'd love for it to recurve, the eastern seaboard is NOT in the clear yet.

When I was listening to that radio station from Dominica during the height of the storm, they were telling callers to open windows on the lee side of their houses to equalize the pressure. I was yelling in my house, thousands of miles away, "DON'T DO THAT! PLEASE DON'T"

I imagine this contributed to some damage :(
All of this is so horrifying. I think the quietness on the boards here lately is everyone is just kind of numb, and we still have months to go until the end of the season.

Like someone else posted ealier.. "hurricane fatique". I'm spent but still have lots of work to do. We took maybe a cat 2 effects over here on the east coast, but still all the debris is on the ground. Its like the local municipalities are in shock, or are awaiting FEMA funding, which is prolly going to areas of more need currently.

This is pretty odd, it even dragged the eye southwest a bit when it happened.

P.R. took a serious hit whenever I see this kind of damage I always think about the memory markers that have forever been removed and they only exist in your head never to be seen again.:(

I'm hopeful Maria is less of an impact on Hispaniola/Bahamas and after (2) extreme landfalls in the USA, nobody needs more destruction. If Maria had made her way to the USA, the USA would respond/recover, and still be the biggest responder to the recovery in PR/NE Caribbean of any country in the world. The media might be focused on the USA, but the good people of this country won't ignore our neighbors in the NE Caribbean. :flag:

Let's wait until we have more than some twitter photos. Florida had some significant building code issues (or codes not being followed). In the picture you embedded you can see one house, with an intact roof, that appeared to take very little damage. That's not by accident, if the roof stays put then generally the damage is much less.

Maybe the homes in Dominica were built somewhat sturdier than those (Country Walk, I'm assuming) homes pictured in South Dade were. The 1980s were quite a time down here in Miami......many of those suburban housing developments went up very quickly, with little or no regard for any kind of quality workmanship, I'm sure.

Can you imagine not boarding up for those winds??? That is just awful!

Starting to become quite concerning in the DR considering Maria is taking her sweet time passing by. I bet there is constant heavy rainfall going on right now....

Looks like Maria is beating up the north shore of the DR this morning. Better start turning to the north soon or Grand Turk might get blasted again. Looking forward to the end of the 2017 hurricane season.....MGC

One thing to consider is that just about all of the pictures & videos I have seen is from the Leeward side of the Island where I am sure the winds where not as strong as the windward side of the Island where Maria made landfall and is not as heavily populated as the Leeward side.

Not sure I understand your comment. I don't know who you are referring to that would choose to totally ignore the devastation. Regardless of where Maria goes, I know the US government and US private charities will not ignore the devastation. The US government provides the greatest amount of humanitarian aid to other countries than anybody on the planet and their are more Private Charities in USA than anywhere that contribute all sorts of aid and relief.
