Let's wait until we have more than some twitter photos. Florida had some significant building code issues (or codes not being followed). In the picture you embedded you can see one house, with an intact roof, that appeared to take very little damage. That's not by accident, if the roof stays put then generally the damage is much less.
Maybe the homes in Dominica were built somewhat sturdier than those (Country Walk, I'm assuming) homes pictured in South Dade were. The 1980s were quite a time down here in Miami......many of those suburban housing developments went up very quickly, with little or no regard for any kind of quality workmanship, I'm sure.
One thing to consider is that just about all of the pictures & videos I have seen is from the Leeward side of the Island where I am sure the winds where not as strong as the windward side of the Island where Maria made landfall and is not as heavily populated as the Leeward side.
winds were onshore in Roseau

Here's a detailed initial report from the Gov't in Dominica, significant for damaged homes on the Windward side of the Island vs the Leeward side as I thought.

But they were on the western and SW quadrant of the eye, weaker.

That point of convection jutting in to the eye might be a sign of intensification...

Since there were several points supporting such, they might just go 115 kt. At the very least it's back up to 110 kt - even though the pressure hasn't fallen.

Once Maria gets out of Irma's wake tonight, I wouldn't be surprised to see the storm intensify again. The convective structure is fairly impressive on microwave imagery.

I know what you're seeing, but there is one eye. The clouds in the middle of the eye are cirrus debris from earlier convection. It has no affect on the TC's structure.

Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
With Maria's extensive damage, 2017 might well have surged past 2005 as the costliest Atlantic season ever, if Harvey's numbers are on the higher end. Never thought I'd see a season like this.
Also I fear for a good bit flood and mudslide damage, at least, over Hispaniola if it doesn't make the NNW turn pretty quickly. Lots of convection blowing up over the island.

Colors of lost purpose on the canvas of irrelevance
Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Thanks for checking in. Some of the rain bands will stick around a long time, not a good situation. Please stay safe.

Thanks for thinking about us! I'm in Cabarete, North Coast Dominican Republic. So far only TS force winds with some higher gusts, heavy rain only in short bands, very high waves pounding our beach, but all good and under control so far here! Crossing my fingers it won't get worst. I took some pix and videos and will update there https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... cbe9a794ce

Re: ATL: MARIA - Hurricane - Discussion
I still haven't heard from my dad or any of my family. I did find out that my dad's barrio is extensively damaged, it is totally underwater and all wooden structures are gone. His house is poured concrete, I am hoping it is just flooded. He did go to my uncles house in Salinas, his house does sit higher. His town Salinas has extensive damage, a quote from the governor of PR "that they still could not communicate with the southeastern part of the island, which was hit earliest and hardest by the storm." So our family is in waiting mode, so stressful I am just tired.
I hope people have been able to check in here from Puerto Rico, I haven't really had a chance to go back and look. Please keep prayers coming!!

The situation in Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic), as told by their prime minister, Roosevelt Skerrit.
