Good morning and Happy 2018...

Another cold start to the day, after the 17 yesterday morning the wx station reads 23 this morning. Things will thaw out starting tomorrow as temps climb into the 40s but the over night lows will still drop into the mid and upper 20s the few nights.

NTX should remain seasonal or just below average thru the weekend. As other have noted our next shot of cold and perhaps some much needed moisture will come in the mid month time frame.

Well we didn’t hit single digits. It got down to 12 and then clouded up which brought the temp back up to 15. This has definitely been a potent cold blast. Not as cold as last December’s or January’s since both of those gave us single digit temps but this one has been longer lasting. We’ve been well below freezing for numerous days. Hopefully there will be more of these to come.

Looking ahead - hopefully we can get a potent storm system in the Jan 10-13th time frame because after that, signs of a January Thaw on the horizon for the 2nd half of the month. Warm phases of the MJO showing up which would allow the Pacific Jet to crash into western North America, keeping Arctic Air bottled up north of the border

Look out for sporadic snow or sleet showers today and tonight as ULL disturbance comes through. HRRR has streaks of reflectivity from N to SE Texas

Right now HGX is thinking sleet for the time being. The HRRR is a bit aggressive with the possibility of some light snow later today as that Central Texas snow band drifts S. Multiple sleet reports coming in across the SE Texas S of I-10.

I'm seeing sleet near Hobby Airport, too. Sleet is tiny, less than 1mm in diameter. No damage to cars out in the parking lot... ;-)

Some light freezing drizzle being reported in the Harlingen and Weslaco area. Looking at the observations it looks like its some mist/light drizzle as the dewpoint is 31 with a temperature of 32.

Special Weather Statement
National Weather Service Brownsville TX
819 AM CST Tue Jan 2 2018

TXZ251-253>255-021630-
Kenedy-Hidalgo-Inland Willacy-Inland Cameron-
Including the cities of Sarita, McAllen, Edinburg, Pharr,
Mission, Weslaco, Raymondville, Brownsville, and Harlingen
819 AM CST Tue Jan 2 2018

...Areas of freezing drizzle affecting the Weslaco and Harlingen
areas...

Surface observations indicate temperatures are near freezing
across portions of the Rio Grande Valley and Ranchlands. In
addition, spotters have reported some areas of light freezing
drizzle falling from Weslaco to Harlingen, which is also
confirmed from radar imagery. Although the precipitation is
expected to remain primarily liquid this morning, some light
icing will be possible on bridges and overpasses the next few
hours.

At 8 am, The Harlingen Police Department reported that some patchy
icing has occurred on local bridges and overpasses and this has
resulted in one minor accident so far this morning.

Morning travelers in the Weslaco and Harlingen areas should
exercise caution when crossing over bridges and overpasses and
should be on the lookout for patchy areas of ice.

Things could get even more interesting later today the HRRR and RGEM both showing snow bands moving into southeast Texas later today.

Can’t confirm this, but according to the radar it’s sleeting in Rockport (where Harvey made landfall).
