Large area of precipitation developing southwest of San Antonio. The lift from the shortwave is here. Should see freezing rain and sleet spread northeastward across SA and Austin over the next few hours.

Good morning. 35F and falling quickly across NW Harris County with winds gusting to 25 MPH and light rain. A quick inspection of the various features indicate that shortwave over Mexico I mentioned yesterday on the KHOU Weather Forum has progressed E toward the Ranchlands of S Central Texas and is approaching the San Antonio/Pleasanton area generally moving E to NE behind the Arctic Boundary near the Coast. Lift is increasing across S Central Texas associated with that feature as well as frotogenesis or lift generating light precipitation of a wintry mix across Austin to College Station. The latest HRRR as well as the typically drier ECMWF suggest a quarter inch of precipitation is possible with some isolated higher amounts nearing .40 possible. Most of that heavier precipitation is freezing rain/sleet with some snow. Conditions should begin to deteriorate after sunrise and continue to deteriorate throughout the morning into the afternoon as temperatures fall into the mid to upper 20's across most of SE Texas except right along the Coast where it may take until the afternoon to transition to a wintry mix.

Temperature has dropped 2 deg (35F) since I woke up at 5am. Going to be a busy day at work. I packed a change of clothes, toiletries, and my ski jacket, along with jeans and some boots. Might get stuck at the office this afternoon. Roads are still OK, even where temps are down to 28F, but that won't last much longer up north in Huntsville. Don't drive anywhere today if you don't have to.

Here in Tyler it is 20° and still snowing. Looks like around 2 inches so far. Most all schools in the area are closed.

How tranquil. :D

Hope everyone enjoyed yet another sleet mini-storm and flizzard. Honestly it was nice to see it accumulate and the wind and cold are impressive. Well on to the next chance. Still about two months of snow potential remaining with the end of January the next best shot. According to local outlooks a 50's-60's warm up starts Friday. Nothing torching. Let's hope the Jan 25-31 timeframe brings a much needed multi-inch snowfall. Hang in there Metroplexers.

On the bright side, nice way to run a thaw! This cold snap kind of came out of nowhere. Originally it was supposed to be just a short, quick snap last Friday-Sat.

Congratulations to those just east. We will need pictures come daylight!

Freezing rain/sleet mix accumulating on car tops and raised surfaces in NW Harris County. TXDOT reports icing beginning on HWY 290 near FM 1098. HGX saying conditions/icing will likely spread further SE into the City over the next couple of hours.

Since my 3 yo son wouldnt sleep last night i turned him into a weather geek. He can now read the radar. We spent 3 hours last night either outside or inside staring at the radar. He got upset anytime I tried to pull up the forum.

For the most part models and in turn most forecasters did well with this event. Maybe not quite as much snow as the most agressive runs but even those had the placement right.

6:30 AM Winter Weather Update from Jeff:

Conditions are deteriorating rapidly over the region.

Freezing line is nearing US 59 and continuing to move southward. Ice formation is being reported on US 290 in Waller County and FM 1097 over Lake Conroe. Road conditions have rapidly worsened in the Lake Somerville and College Station areas along HWY 21 with multiple reports of ice.

Waves of precipitation…freezing rain and sleet mixed will continue to move across the region for the next several hours as surface temperatures fall into the upper 20’s N of US 59 and to freezing all the way to the coast. Accumulations of ice will be increasing this morning especially on bridges and overpasses
