Coldest morning in 7 years here in the Austin area. Temps in Travis County ranged from 9 to 18 degrees at 7 am. It’s 16.8 degrees at the Portastorm Weather Center as I write. :cold:

Yep, Euro and GFS ENS agree - Jan 26-27th has some potential...the trajectory of the S/W's they have been trending towards the past few days typically are good setups for the Northern part of the southern plains. It will probably trend deeper or more progressive over the next few runs, hopefully the former

IAH officially 19F at 6:53 AM. Sea level pressure is 30.88 which apparently is the highest since January10,1962. Hobby is 20F that broke its previous record of 25F in 1965. I'm sure there will be a lengthy Public Information Statement from HGX. The official snowfall at IAH was a tenth of an inch which tied the most official snowfall for January 16th in Houston back in 1953.

I know you N Texas folks missed out on all the wintry "fun", but Metro Houston is still a disaster for traveling both on the freeway/toll way systems, some major surface streets and both Major Airports. Some folks were stuck on the SW Freeway (I-69) just outside the 610 West Loop to the Brazos River for over 8 hours overnight. It as been decades seen I've seen Houston virtually shut down from a Winter Weather Event and that will continue throughout the day down here as we barely will get above freezing this afternoon.

Those light winds kept us from plummetting hard. Cleared out around 1 am. 20F temp, DP at 12 right now in my backyard. Had some room to fall even more. HP will be sliding by during the day now.

If you think it's cold here......
MOSCOW (AP) — Even thermometers can't keep up with the plunging temperatures in Russia's remote Yakutia region, which hit minus 67 degrees Celsius (minus 88.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in some areas Tuesday.

In Yakutia — a region of 1 million people about 3,300 miles (5,300 kilometers) east of Moscow — students routinely go to school even in minus 40 degrees. But school was canceled Tuesday throughout the region and police ordered parents to keep their children inside.

In the village of Oymyakon, one of the coldest inhabited places on earth, state-owned Russian television showed the mercury falling to the bottom of a thermometer that was only set up to measure down to minus 50 degrees. In 2013, Oymyakon recorded an all-time low of minus 71 degrees Celsius (minus 98 Fahrenheit).

Over the weekend, two men froze to death when they tried to walk to a nearby farm after their car broke down. Three other men with them survived because they were wearing warmer clothes, investigators reported. But the press office for Yakutia's governor said Tuesday that all households and businesses in the region have working central heating and access to backup power generators.
Residents of Yakutia are no strangers to cold weather and this week's cold spell was not even dominating local news headlines Tuesday.

Polar blocking and Aleutian ridge is building some stupid cold air over there :uarrow:. Guidance suggests down the road some of it crosses the pole.

For metro Houston, solar insulation will help some despite not warming up too much. I've seen ice and snow melt up here in 20s with ample sunshine. It won't melt all of it but perhaps help out on well traveled streets. For Cpv17 I hope your power comes back soon. Always good to prepare for that in case such a situation arises when in a long cold snap

I know some on here said 1989 was a possible analog for this winter and they nailed it. Over here in Gonzales in SE LA we made it down to a record of 15, along with Baton Rouge and other surrounding cities. Coldest since you guessed it, December of 1989. We had freezing rain in the afternoon then sleet from 5 til around 11. Entire interstate system is shutdown from Lafayette to New Orleans to slidell.

It's too bad the whole winter couldn't be like today and yesterday, isn't it? After a brief warm-up over the next week, models are indicating more building cold all across Canada by the end of the month. I think I'll go catch some rays... :layout:

Graham came in at a balmy 3° this morning. That's about 60 miles Northwest of Fort Worth.
