Texas Winter 2017-2018

Kind of frustrating that the current GFS isn't showing any cold or freeze to 384 hours.

Probably time to put a fork in it and just hope the precip continues for as long as we can get it. I can say I gave up on winter pretty early, after the time the Euro blanketed a lot of Texas with 16 inches of snow and then it turned out nothing at all happened lol.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with this winter. I recorded single digit lows twice at my house, a dusting of snow, an ice storm, accumulating sleet, thunder sleet and many many freezes and a few days with highs below to well below freezing. Id like winter to stick around a little longer as working outside in 100 degree temps gets old fast but its definitely been a better winter than the last 2 to 3.

As in earlier post, rain is moving in from the west and southwest. Quite impressive plume from the Pacific. DFW still has a shot at the Feb record if it rains in the right place today.

0.81" ties it 0.82 breaks record held by 1997, the year a super El Nino blossomed

As we close out the Winter thread today I would like to thank everyone for your insight and objected views of this winter. It's what makes this community so much fun to be a part of and I truly appreciate being part of such a awesome group of people.

Chalk another Winter outlook success up to the "Halloween Anology" this La Nina was cooler/wetter for much of Texas this year, which sure as hell beats what we had the last 2 winters...

Oh, and let's give props when do, wxman57 came through on his promiss for most!! However He still owes DFW, so at some point next winter we are going to come collecting on that

Thank you to everyone for their brilliant insight this winter. I’m extremely happy with how it went this year.. Happier with a winter than i have been in a while. We, in dfw, got consistent cold with very few warm temps, below mormal months...It’s even in the top 10 wettest winters we’ve ever had, so that’s always nice. It was like the perfect winter, but, we just missed out on snow. Very happy for everyone who got the winter of a lifetime this year—next year it’s dfw’s turn!

Yep, safe to say winter is all but over with...our go-to -EPO looks as if it's about to sky rocket positive. Another disappointing winter in the books for the Metroplex!! Looking at the trailing 90 day SOI numbers - was this even a La Nina Winter ???

Oh well, still really enjoyed all of the thoughtful discussions and model watching on here...one of the best weather discussion boards around. Take care everyone, here's to hopefully an El Nino Modoki 2018-19 Winter to look forward to! Cheers!!!

DFW has picked up 0.13" the past few hours. The magic number is 0.68 to tie Feb record. HRRR has a solid line of rain this evening. Will come down to the wire, nailbiter finish!

At this pace, someone is gonna approach 90 one day. Is that even possible? Would the gulf have to be that warm for that to happen?
Mid to low 80s would already seem to be unbearable.

Edit: Well a quick search answered my question yes. Night time lows can be quite high. Arizona & Nevada 90s, Death Valley 100's, and even Lincoln Nebraska July 25th 1936 91degrees. The graphs on the weather underground site show an increasing trend over the last 120+ years..

I don't think there are many things more unpleasant than riding a hot bus. Maybe a hot airplane. Count your blessings, don't feel cranky lol

All this rain is really out of character for a La Nina winter. I won't say I'm not tired of this every single freaking day for two weeks now, but I hope Spring brings more above average rainfall!

Edit: Well a quick search answered my question yes. Night time lows can be quite high. Arizona & Nevada 90s, Death Valley 100's, and even Leavenworth, Kansas 92 degrees on Aug. 10, 1934 and Lincoln, Nebraska 91 degrees on July 25th, 1936.
